Great review man! And I'm glad you put effort into making your videos look and sound professional. I see so many other YouTubers who are great with reviews but their lighting and sound is so off-putting that you hardly want to watch the video. I shoot video for a living so I know good stuff when I see it, keep it up!

I could imagine if W.B, DC comics, and A24 do a movie adaptation of the comic of batman arkham asylum: a serious house on serious earth
what do u think of that?

Great review, Griffin! This film was such an experience! I loved how thematically layered it was and that cinematography was gorgeous. I imagine Pugh will be snubbed come awards season like Toni Collette was last year, but I think this one really has a shot for a Cinematography nomination! I totally agree with you about how this is a movie about extremes. We've got the obvious extremes when it comes to the rituals and the lingering shots of shocking imagery, but the emotional extremes of the various relationships were impressive as well. I liked Hereditary a bit more, but I can't wait to see what Ari Aster has in store for us next!

Thanks so much! Totally thought I responded to you 😅 apologies. I’m hoping this film gets some awards love, but there’s still a lot of films left to come out. Pugh is EXCELLENT though and the cinematography is genius. Aster continues to impress and has become a director who’s next projects I’ll be anticipating. Weirdly I think I did enjoy this more than Hereditary? Only because I related A LOT, but but both films are masterful. Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed the film.

Only a man would think this is a story about a couple. This is a story about DANI. And her break up is with the Christian model of family and community. To the one she finds at Midsommer. Once she jettisoned Christian she is released and she smiles. She has found family. Wearing the rune for Journey. A three sentence synopsis turned into a movie that’s 35 minutes too long. Ps: can we just admit both H and M have weak third acts.

I was disappointed with Midsommar it’s not an awful movie at all but I just didn’t get invested with the characters and story Ari Aster was telling. I thought Hereditary was a much better film. This gets a 3/5 stars from me. The best part was the cinematography

          • FilmSpeak

Fair enough. It definitely isn’t for everyone, I just felt the characters and the journey they went on and the themes tackled were incredibly relatable and well realized. Cinematography was unreal, agreed.

So, in my country, Indonesia, Midsommar will hit the theater in August. And the worst part is the censor guy will cut the epic scene like the violence one.
What I'm gonna ask you is, will that censored thingy will ruin the movie? Please guys, help me.

I truthfully don’t see how they could show the 3rd act of this film censored. I would say yeah, it’ll ruin the movie.

@FilmSpeak bet. I'll look into it! Thanks for replying as well! Your video was ON. POINT. I just saw the movie last night, as it was one of my most anticipated of the year, and I just felt in a daze when it was over. Like literally uneasy and paranoid on my walk home from the theater lol

I'm debating if I want to see it again like I did for Hereditary, which made me feel similar but I ended up enjoying a lot more after a second viewing.

Any chance you do a spoiler review?

I’m so sick of these high brow bullshit movies and their critiques. I’m in no rush to see some artsy Ass movie that I have continuously be looking for the deeper meaning into. And made to feel less than if I don’t give a fuck about those pompous interpretations.
Hereditary was total bullshit and the only horror I experienced was realizing I’d lost two hours of my life to a overrated movie.

                        FilmSpeak   4 months back

In fairness, this is fair less high brow than Hereditary. It’s actually very straightforward and doesn’t require you to dig into subtext, that being said, it’s there for sure.

                    • Days of French 'n' Swedish

I'd say a super underrated indy film from 2013 "Coherence" is a similar experience in terms of framing a relationship in a sort of nightmarish scenario.
I reviewed the preview of this film only because I am not sure I want to go as far as watching the movie... I go to lots of Swedish festivals and gatherings, and my wife and I semi-go-through this every time.

Hereditary messed me up so bad, I literally cannot even begin to imagine a more wonderfully disturbed film so to hear you say that the imagery is two fold...I just can't wait to see it.

While both different, there are some thematic through-lines that carry over. It's a nice companion piece. I think I slightly prefer it to Hereditary. It's just more ambitious and has something a bit more interesting/relatable to say. Gave me slight Suspiria vibes in how I felt walking out and that was my favorite film of last year sooooo I guess take that as you will haha.

Hereditary is certainly an experience...as is Midsommar but in a different way, though it also has similarities...you’ll see. Hope you really dig it though!

@FilmSpeak Nice! I think i'll love this movie then. It might also be up there as my top 3 of the year. My fav as of now is Rocketman. Incredible movie.

Nah not at all! The criticism is constructive in moving forward. Once some changes are made I think I'll switch to a 1-10 rating. Suspiria is masterful, as is Hereditary, but it was my favorite of last year. I think there are a lot of similarities in how Midsommar and Suspiria make you feel walking out. Fascinating stuff!

But yeah, wasn't trying to sound like a jerk or amything.. i appreciate the originality of the grading system but the grading system is just too different i guess? I enjoy the classic whatever stars out of 5 or on a 1-10 scale. Thanks man. I'll definitely keep watching ur channel. I can't wait to see Midsommar. I was a huge fan of Hereditary. My number 2 fav movie of last year right after Suspiria. ✌

So glad this film is getting love! I’ve been super excited to see it for a while now, I really like Ari’s visual style and I love weird cult concepts. I’m sad I skipped out on seeing Hereditary in theaters because based on my love for “Mother!” I appreciate controversial (that word escaped my mind I had to search it up haha) films. There haven’t been any good horror movies this year (I don’t really see US as a true horror film). So I’m hoping this one really gets me!

100% with you there. Suspiria is a great example and I had a similar reaction that as I did with this film. If that’s the horror you enjoy, Midsommar won’t disappoint.

Men vs. Movies I guess it just depends on your definition of horror. A perfect horror film for me holds a mix of psychological and physical terror. The only film I can think of right now that does that perfectly is the Shining. A film like Suspiria which I don’t think is overtly necessarily terrifying, I really enjoyed the stain on my mind that was left after viewing it. That’s more or less what I want when going out of a “horror” movie, is just to feel disgusted or strange when leaving or further thinking about the movie. Of course it’s great to be unsettled while in the theater to. I’m not a big fan of just popcorn horror like most of the Blumhouse repertoire, or blockbuster horror like IT (2017) or the films in the Conjuring Cinematic Universe that are just accessible horror films with cheap jump scares that don’t really leave an impact on the viewer (in my opinion)

Well while the film is fantastic. I don’t really consider it “horror” as well. It’s more unsettling? Than anything? I guess? Haha. There’s disturbing imagery for sure, but it really isn’t overtly scary. So just go in with those kind of expectations. Hope you love it!

It was interesting because Aster actually wrote the script listening to his music and the hit him up afterwards to do the score. He definitely had a sound envisioned. All the sound elements were great too. It’s a wild trip!
