You can hunt around with a magnet unless it is the stock distributor drive gear, which can be made of bronze which is, as far as I know,  is not magnetic. But if you take the damaged gear with all the teeth and the ring they were on and weigh it. Then find a gear that is the type or number and, weigh it and subtract the old one from the new one and there you go. Obviously this is not an exact science but it is helpful in your time of need. There is no definitive with cars. They can be possessed, they can defy all realms of space, time, science, spirituality, and who knows. There were times that the condition would just go away with no rhyme nor reason. That is the code for it, "nRnR" . That is why you can sometimes sneak up on a mechanic and he will have a light hammer (especially with a benign squeak or a secretive knock that can also contain the mystifying come and go) and  tapping all over the bottom and motor compartment looking for that stinking gremlin that is hiding on this car. And if he doesn't find it.  He just starts all over with the next bigger hammer and continues his (or her) diagnostic evaluation. Eventually someone will have to stop him before he beats it  to death.  We are still searching the infinite car repair universe for the perfect repair possibilities. Who knows if we will ever find it!  Your mileage may vary!

Why not build a 426 Hemi????? taller deck, stronger, cross bolt mains 4.6 bore x 4.6 stroke = 610 cu in no problem with block or deck. Oh, make more horsepower. Has a outside oil pump, bigger pump. Well for one thing, make use of symmetrical intake ports. Sells several heads for this.
