Wouldn't it be easier to use a young actor but in old-age makeup for the other role?

This is how it should have been made, same story but with Alfonso Ribeiro as the Carlton character, exactly the same.

I saw this movie last night and don't understand the criticism it's received. I saw it in bog standard 2d so don't know if that made a difference. 8 out of 10 from me

High frame rate sounds similar to watching eastenders in High Def. It looks like a set and has no realism compared to standard def

Maybe it’s the presence of Bruckheimer, but even before I heard from Mark that this dated back as far as it did, it felt just from the premise and the trailer like a 90s action film from the era when Bruckheimer was a box office king.

What a waste of a career. Has there ever been such a discrepancy between an actor's talent and the quality of films he's appeared in?

Will Smith is a great actor, he just can't pick a good script even if his life depended on it.

It sounds like a work filled with, and dependent on, intertextuality.

Will Smith, an actor of whom it is often remarked has made a career of playing himself, is playing a character who, with the best will in the world, sounds like an amalgamation of all his previous roles put together. And he is being hunted by a younger version of himself... an entirely digital version of himself... who is presumably out to kill him/ replace him, whatever, in a film shot on the format-of-the-future.

                              That's... I don't have the words.
                              Almost wonderful.

60fps (or 120 if you're splitting hairs/eyes) is great for video games because you want realism; you want things to look like they are happening in front of you as your character moves inexorably from one place to the next. This emphatically doesn't work for film, unless you aren't cutting from a POV perspective. It didn't even work well when Michael Mann used HD video in Public Enemies. And when half your target audience are familiar with YouTube videos that *do* look like they were filmed in someone's back yard for next-to-nothing, why would you want to emulate that??

Will is not suited to these miserable looking sorry-faced roles.
He's much better in his old upbeat nonchalant jokey roles.

                                    Not even tempted.

I 100% agree what he’s saying about high frame rate. If ever you looking for TVs, the stores are playing movies in high frame rate and they all look like crap- it Deirdre’s elements of the image so much it makes movement look odd and makes a film look like a live tv broadcast. It’s ugly as sin and a pretty stupid idea

surely the technology has always been there to make this and do it better than theyve done it here? you get a young actor and then you use makeup to turn him into the older guy surely? why get an old guy and try to cgi him to be younger? i saw th trailer and it looked garbage.

Yes but ordinary cinema goers like me that just go to be entertained don't understand all this "super high frame" guff. What about a review of what happened in the film? People like me know nothing, and care even less, about the format. For the record I thoroughly enjoyed it, although I've seen the same plot many times, but the action bits were good and so were the sidekicks especially M E Winstead who added humour as well as being surprisingly good in fights.

Could have been worse, Will Smith could have said "actually, you don't need the fancy FX, I have a son who could play the younger me".

The ultra real, you're-on-set feel also highlights some of the substance-less lines and strained jokes, as the lack of atmosphere, just leaves you with the actors, as if they're workshopping dialog. And it likes you've been dumped on set, not allowed to leave, sat watching, bored out of your mind, hoping the actors can do better.

I understand what he is saying about it not feeling cinematic, maybe true at first but after a while the action feels more real and alive and like it is taking place on a stage play in front of you.

We're just not conditioned to a HFR in cinema.

When we're presented things at a cinematic framerate (~25 FPS), we can suspend our disbelief and immerse into fantasy, because that's what we're used to. In contrast, what we see in a HFR (~50+ FPS) are things like reality TV, the news, documentaries, behind the scenes footage, et cetera. So when something that's obviously fantasy is presented to us in a HFR, our disbelief isn't suspended and we don't immerse into it.

So we're engaged more at an emotional level. When it's all laid out, you're just like, right, there it is, and it just leaves you neutral.
