THE NEW BOOK is: Explorer's Guide to Wildemount! (D&D 5e/Critical Role) | Nerd Immersion

  • Published: 12 January 2020
  • So as a surprise to just about everyone...the new D&D book isn't a D&D campaign setting at all, it's an official partnership between Wizard of the Coast and Critical Role. That's right, the new book is the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, a campaign setting and several starter adventures. It'll be interesting to see what an official collaboration between Matthew Mercer/Critical Role and D&D will be, though I don't think this was the top of the list for what everyone was hoping for. What are your thoughts?

I'm not a fan of Critical Role, but I'm not against the show either. Just doesn't interest me much.

Wizards can publish whatever they want. Especially if it's wildly popular and expanded the hobby.

It would be nice to have more books to not notice passing on one but *someone* (I'm looking at you many many people in the last 30 years) whined about too many books coming out so now Wizards has too few releases in my opinion.

Im not surprised, criticalrole introduced tens of thousands of new players to dnd.. it only makes sense that dnd would pay them back by making their content official.

I can't help but find the description funny:

"the new D&D book isn't a D&D campaign setting at all"

"the new book is the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, a campaign setting"

I feel like this is WotC saying crap we don't know what to design, lets get someone else to do it for us...
In all seriousness though, I do think it is pretty cool that they did this since Matt has done so much to expand the D&D 5e community. I also really wish WotC would just listen to their customer base though. Players have been pushing for another campaign setting for years. The top two I usually see are Eberron and Dark Sun. Now they brought out Eberron, with a completely unasked for setting right after. It just seems odd from that perspective.

I think it's amazing to get new DND settings. Especially to see what is essentially a fan made setting that wizards liked enough to officially make cannon. That's awesome.

I've followed CR since day one, love all of them, but I'm burnt out on CR. Its A good move for both sides. I won't buy it, but I'm happy it will draw more people to the hobby💯

This is the best possible book I could hope for. I want to start DMing, but the forgotten realms and all typical DnD settings are just impossible to learn all about. I am familiar with Wildemount from watching Critical Role. Using this book will be the best way for me to run a good campaign

It was headed in this direction for awhile starting with Dndbeyond adding Critical Role content to their site. Critical Role has boast sales over the past few year so it's only fitting that this happened.

Guys seemingly disappointed in it downtrodden, upset or outraged possibly? That's just the age we live in where nothing is ever good enough for anything and there's always going to be a bunch of negative videos about it because that's what sells

WotC is starting to really feel like the Disney of gaming by flashing this garbage in our faces instead of producing content that the long time fans would latch onto.

A new setting, to welcome the newer generation of players to the game, is a great idea. More importantly, though, this has zero impact on the release schedule WotC will or won't do. A March Release is outside the normal release window of D&D, so this is basically a bonus book. (Last year we got Wayfinder's in March)

Also, yes I wish they would give us Spell Jammer etc. but this is great. For CriticalRole fans, this is awesome. For D&D fans, this is just as awesome. You get more of what you love.

The only bad part is the D&D hipsters talking bad on the book because it has something to do with CriticalRole. They were in it, “before it was cool” and don’t want to see the main reason for the D&D explosion in popularity succeed at an official capacity.

I only ask, what is the difference between Matt’s world and the world of Eberron? They are both created by community members and incorporated into the official D&D content. There is no difference.

                                                                        • Drake Lucian

Wizards probably had less to do on this book since the crit role team came up with the concepts, we just have to wait for the product to cycle out and I'm sure soon after we'll get more dnd content. I like the idea of more content overall and that's really what this is, not at the expense of anything but a little time.

I know just from those how much DMing talent Mercer has because making a balanced class is definitely harder than world building.

The thing I would probably say is a downside to this book is that people may not bring justice to Mercer's work as they try to run a game in his world. So it may divide some play groups if that callout happens. Or it won't, we'll see.

But either way, I'm just excited for new content, it makes me wonder if that means the things I previously mentioned will be official now. • Pastor Plague

While i love critical role, I wish they would have done something with their own IPs. Eberron needs more then just a focus on sharn, Darksun or dragon lance would be nice as well. Heck they were making a huge deal out of december being D&D sapphire anniversary why not do something from Gary Gygax's vault instead? Again love mercer and CR but WotC just ignores what the fan base has been asking for since 5e came out.

I see a lot of people in the comments complaining about the new dnd book being critical role instead of an older setting like darksun or dragon lance. I find this complaint to be a little unmitigated due to the fact that WoTC is most definitely working on multiple projects at the same time, this one just happened to come out first. More dnd content is a good thing and if WoTC is willing to make it official it must have met a lot of standards/ been good enough for them to make official content.

Big fan of Critical Role and Matt, and its hard to argue that the success of Critical Role has pulled a lot of people into trying 5e. It makes sense just from a business perspective, with their 'RPG Rockstar' status, to throw in this campaign setting. But still disappointing it wasn't of the many other (reasonable) ideas people were speculating about. And as much as I love how Matt runs games, his setting never has been very 'unique'- its his players and his stories that caught my attention.

On a positive note, maybe this means that the animated show will be able to legally use WotC properties such as the name 'Beholder'? IIRC there are a lot of particular terms and creatures they legally own.

I mean, is the DM gonna be constantly worried that their lore is wrong? (Yes.) And flavorwise it's not meaningfully distinct from the Forgotten Realms. Everyone and everything is magic. There is no historical realism (bigotry, feudalism, plague, etc.). It's a United Colors of Benetton commercial of quirky NPCs and fight scenes. But to me, the game world is "generic D&D rules." Just not very interesting.

(yes)" - this is a fairly ridiculous thing to ask, and even more ridiculous to say "yes" about. setting guides like these are meant to be more like a template for DM's to build on top of and change however they like. they don't have to stick to the established lore if they don't want to - same way it is for literally any campaign setting/guide. and if any DM is actually worried about this as you say they would be, then they simply don't yet understand a DM's role.

also, as a note: the setting of Eberron started out the exact same way this one did - it's essentially, as you referred to this one as, a "codified homebrew campaign" setting.
