Love your thoughts on films. He's a master at what he does. Hereditary had me shook ha.. and this movie was a wild experience. I enjoyed both. Heavy subjects and not easy to watch though.

Christian wasn’t just a bad boyfriend, he was a shitty person in general and that’s why he deserved what he got, maybe...

re: Am I the only one who thought Hereditary was bloated, was the wrong kind of slow, that the decapitation while driving was not just badly done, but comically so, with fx that were painfully obvious? I'm just amazed at the critical reception for the film. I can see liking portions of it, and appreciating the work with models, but overall it was a weak film with almost entirely unmemorable dialogue.

You know.....im starting to think that Mr. Aster, the Director for this movie, is a very big fan of a Mr. Mel Gibson....because...i can see that Mid Sommar as so much the same shock values as a Mel Gibons movies like....Passion of Chirst and Apocalypto. Now...if any one as seen even Apocalypto...will know exactly what i mean.

Do you know why people from Switzerland are so nice?
The whole country is a giant cult they elect a ruler by the purge the survivor of the purge becomes the ruler of Switzerland

Somehow I'm catching this review three weeks late -- I just got done sharing way too much over Once Upon a Time in Hollywood -- but this is the first review to get me genuinely intrigued about catching this, thanks.

Midsommar was very clever. It’s hyperfocused on themes of anxiety, depression and fear of abandonment to the point where you aloof to the ritualistic violence surrounding the characters.

Another " reviewer " that has the mind that a cult like the one in midsommer would take advantage of. Did you not see what Pele did to in the movie? Did you recognize the name " Christian "? Look up what Dani Ashter means in Latin. Did you recognize the accents of the cult leaders? Did you not see the drawing with the skull and the sun? Did you not hear about the crown of intuition? Christian isnt the bad guy. Im really tired of the hatred for the guy. Watch the film again..The cult is evil and is behind everything by taking advantage.

Aster is one the best new directors (along with Villeneuve). His visual style is distinctively, beautifully unsettling. But don't forget the incredibly effective sound design. The crying and howling at the begging when her family died. Wow, what a start. I felt overwhelmed. I felt the narrative was framed around grief (as its something can related to rather than the relational elements you described), but it was really interesting to hear your perspective. Bloody good film.

I would argue that Midsommar actually has two significant " jump" scares...the first of which has been playing continuosly in my minds eye for three days now.

Very good review. I must insist however, that there is a lot more evidence in Scandinavian-Celtic archaeology and lore to support the authenticity of these rituals than you would appear to believe. Trouble is, in order to get anywhere, ethnographic research requires persistence, much travelling and a deep knowledge of the Germanic, Celtic and Finno-Ugric language families. For YouTubers wanting to make a start, see ‘The Ritual’ (NOT the film, a 1965 novel bt David Pinner which inspired ‘The Wicker Man’), ‘The White People’ (a 1908 (or so) novelette by Arthur Machen - a bizarre tale, but a masterpiece), ‘The Wicker Man’ itself (the 1973 original), ‘Vikings’ (S01 E07 (human sacrifice at Uppsala), S02 E08 (Blood Eagle). The Swedes are definitely NOT the only ‘guilty’ ones (if we can call it that). Try the Druidic rituals in Wales and Cornwall as reported by the Romans.....

I am obsessed with this movie! I don't really do horror. I'll just watch a buncha reviews on You Tube and that'll usually satisfy me. But the more I watched, the more I HAD to see this movie! I absolutely loved it! Disturbing as hell. And, I friggin' LOVED it! I'm still nervous about watching Hereditary though, lol.

There was a goth femme in the line and I thought she was for sure gonna see this film. I think she saw lion king instead. If you haven’t read The Golden Bough a lot of this is going right over your head. I’m ‘like why are they constantly processing flax in every scene?’ Re-examining my love affair with linen.

Lots of symbolism in the movie. Even from the first shot lays the foundation for what is going to happen in the end of the movie. This film is more of an antithesis of filmography to Hereditary. Most of hereditary is shot in the dark and the "monsters" are hidden in his wide shot scenes. You can anticipate what can happen to the main character throughout the movie. Alternatively, in Midsommar, everything is shot in daylight and all of the perpetrators are visible. You just dont know exactly WHEN the violence will happen. And yes in Sweeden or other areas in the arctic circle, the sun does not set for nearly half a year.

I think people focus too much on the relationship aspect of the film. I find that the themes of culture and family are the most significant.

I haven't seen this film yet but along the lines of twisted horror/psycological films I highly recommend Calvaire. It's in french so having to read subtitles can add a bit to some confusion.

I think the script needed many more drafts before any filming started. I thought the relationship between the couple was very interesting and complex in the beginning but suddenly at the end it was just silly and one dimensional.
I loved the movie's depiction of anxiety and panic attacks. That was spot on but the story was just not there yet. Still love Ari Aster and will watch all his movies but this one kinda sucked for me personally. And I didn't think the gore looked remotely realistic so it didn't really affect me anytime something gory happened.
I might watch it again with fresh eyes later and see what I think then but for now it's a meh for me

I’ve been at that point in a relationship before and it was uncomfortably relatable. I wanted to comfort her, I’ve never seen such a real representation of a failing relationship. Much like David Lynch, Ari lingers in mundane moments that make everything seem so real. aster is an incredible director. He really understands how to get under your skin.

The last shot, the very last shot of Dani's face legit SEALED it for me.

Then I saw you were talking about 'Midsommar'. I was not going to see this film, but since it sounds like a rip off of Harvest Home, I guess I will have to see it.

I liked it as much as the 1970s Wickerman. I liked this movie. A lot of people said it was too long and slow. I think it was perfect . I think I f you have never seen the 1970s Wickerman you would enjoy this movie more.
