Would a CFP expansion be good for College Football?

Oregon, Georgia and Utah have no business over Oklahoma. Oregon almost lost to Washington state, lost to Auburn. LSU beat Texas by 7 and Oklahoma beat Texas by 7. Georgia loses to South Carolina with is unranked. Utah loses to an unranked team. Oklahoma is being left out for some NCAA, Committee reason. This eye test is BS. Nobody is ranked in the Pac 10 in the top 25 but Utah and Oregon.

"It doesn't matter in post season play" wouldn't they be trying to win the west? If you win the west, you can play for the SEC title, and that AQ spot, so yes, it would matter.

You would also schedule tough non-conference games to boost strength of schedule, in case you are a one-loss team that doesn't win their respected conference. In that case you could fight for one of the three at-large bids. The regular season may be diminished a tad, but not to the degree
      Mr. Klatt says.

Problem is if they don't expand the CFP all the schools that are not in the bigger conference will suffer it will be even worse with just SEC teams getting stronger, because if you're one of the best recruits in the country you want to try and compete for a national title not have no chance at all because you went to a PAC-10 conference.

The skill gap between the Pats and the Bengals is infinitesimally smaller than the skill gap between LSU and WKU, or Ohio (Not Ohio State), or any number of small teams.
When the Pats get upsetted, it shows the strength of any team that beat them. All 16 NFL games matter because of how much these teams actually play each other, and how relatively equally matched they are.

That argument saying that expanding the playoffs would downgrade the regular season. They will still be intensity and urgency in every serious game that effects a playoff rank.

No the LSU vs Bama game would become like a scrimmage or a pre-season game. An I would not watch that. I'd go do something else besides watch TV.

Ohio State is better than Miami’s best national championship team. I’m a Canes fan, but Ohio State isn’t letting anyone in the game from the 2nd quarter and their starters haven’t played a 4 quarter game yet.

When Klatt goes on his diatribe of "the regular season matters", I wished Colin would actually ask why teams like Bama playing Citadel or Wofford in the regular season matters. It's a BS argument to say that expanding the playoff protects the importance of the regular season when all to big schools schedule creampuffs throughout Non conference. Either the entire season matters and if your scheduling soft hurts you, regardless of tradition, or the season doesn't matter nearly as much as Klatt proclaims. It's just one more way to ensure exclusivity and money flows to very specific schools.

Has Klatt seen Bama's non-conference schedule? Those SEC schools don't play anyone because they think they can ride the conference to strength of schedule.

And the politically picked committee making all the decisions. Its all about money. The Sports money market is so far out of concept with reality, its disgusting.

Gotta agree with Klatt on this one. Part of what makes college football so great is because you know that in some games your season is on the line. An 8 team playoff sounds great but if LSU/Bama played and it were an 8 team playoff it wouldn’t mean as much.

Brian UCf didn’t make it because they’re garbage and proved it against LSU in the Fiesta Bowl. If Baylor and Minnesota win out they will 100% make it over Alabama and its not even debatable. Ohio States season will be on the line in the Big 10 championship because if they lose that game they will not make it. Make an 8 team playoff and Ohio State makes it regardless if they win or lose that game.

I think they ranked Alabama at 3 for the exact opposite reason. They put bama at 3 so if they did lose to Lsu they can still put them at 4 because they lost to the number 2 team. Im really surprised they didn’t put lsu at #1 to make this point even stronger.

I’m still watching LSU vs Bama if there’s an 8 team playoff, the regular season matters still with 8 teams the only difference is a team can lose 1 or 2 games with good sos. I’m sorry any one who argues that less competition and games is good for the sport is stupid

Brian that’s why I argue for an 8 team as well they put Bama in every year even tho Bama doesn’t play a single team that’s worth a damn until November. So let’s give some other conferences a chance. Klatt acts like the regular season matters so much and does for every team not named bama

Kyle Chandler or if you’re Bama you can still make the CFP with a mediocre SOS and one loss.

What we have in place now I think is as close to the ideal as we can possibly get without making an overhaul. It's in FACT a double-elimination championship. Teams that lose two games are excluded. If we include eight then that paradigm changes to three. Sixteen it's four and so on. There's nothing to be gained by including additional teams in the championship. Zip. Nada. Nothing. It's a terrible idea. It will ruin the sport. By the way eight was prohibitive in the BCS. That's why they included a fifth bowl. That element hasn't changed. Eight won't address access appropriately. It's a bad idea. It is.

For the casual fans, a ‘bama vs. LSU game in the regular season would mean less over time with an 8-team playoff. Maybe not the first or second year of the 8-team playoff but over time, some of the rivalry games and current “big games” would matter less because 1 and 2 loss teams in Power conferences would still get playoff bids anyway. So the regular season WOULD mean less. Agree with Joel. Although it would give way to out of conference rivalries to take shape via a larger playoff format (i.e. Clemson vs. ‘bama).

They've also beaten a lot of teams that have huge flaws and so-so seasons. As it stands now, I think it'll be Ohio State, LSU, Clemson, and Alabama. Ohio State-Bama and LSU-Clemson in the first round.
