You can lose ALL your points for playing one too many people in Aussie Rules football | Weird Rules

  • Published: 27 June 2019
  • The simplest mistakes can have the biggest consequences. No, I'm not talking about why I'm here in the first place, but an extremely weird rule that can wipe out your entire score if you have just one too many players on the field. What's more is in this sport, there are already 18-players on each side, so honestly how big of a difference is 19?

In Aussie Rules Football, if you field one extra person - whether by mistake or a substitute coming on too early for an injured player - the umpires can knock you all the way back down to zero. It's like that kid you played games with growing up who would get frustrated and make up a rule that started everything over. And no one likes that kid. I hope you read this, Tyler.

Legitimately think this might be the harshest rule that we've covered on the show. Like, this feels as though someone woke up grumpy and just wanted to be a jerk. Y'all got anything you think is worse?

How about golf? You could compete for all four days of the tournament, win by (let's say) 12 strokes. If on hole #9 on the final day you wrote down a 3 (when you actually got a 4) and on hole #10 you wrote down a 4 (when you actually got a 3), you will automatically be disqualified even though your final score is correct.

That's Rule 6-6d, and that's probably as harsh/stupid a rule as the Aussie Rules Football one.

Article 12.2 of the FIDE Laws of Chess states:

"It is strictly forbidden to bring mobile phones or other electronic means of communication, not authorised by the arbiter, into the playing venue. If a player’s mobile phone rings in the playing venue during play, that player shall lose the game. The score of the opponent shall be determined by the arbiter."

The rule was introduced to stop the possibility of players obtaining external assistance during their chess games through mobile phones or other electronic communication devices.

Some tournaments make players hand in their mobile phones prior to play, and they are stored outside of the playing venue.

Should look out some of the rules of Cricket. Batsman takes more than three minutes to get out to the centre of the pitch? He's out Timed Out. Still takes too long to get the next batsmen on the field? Umpires can award the match to the other team.

Couldn't you just have everyone on the field until you get a point? What are they going to do, bring your 0 down to 0?

Yeah this basically never happens. Especially at a professional level. I've never seen this rule enacted.

What about just instantly disqualifying an entire team. Like making the team the made the foul auto lose.

This rule seems harsh, but was written back when interchanges weren't really a thing. Back then, if you ended the game with 19 players on the field, chances are you started the game with 19 players on the field. If you have 19 players on the field, you aren't playing within the rules and all points you have accumulated have been accumulated through illegitimate means, and shouldn't be counted. Fairly straightforward logic from the rules people in my opinion, honestly one of the least weird rules you have done so far. Harsh, but not weird.

It is only weird now because interchanges have just increased the likelihood of such an incident happening, but it doesn't happen often enough for people to do much about it. (Though it did get changed to losing all your score in the quarter of the infringement up until the infringement rather than all your score in the entire game i believe.)

Hey guys, the players can always see the score. You're kind of right about the clock - there's no countdown, the clock counts up. Quarters are 20 minutes long plus time on, so players know the quarter will usually go between 25-30 minutes depending on how many goals are kicked (which adds a little to time on since play stops and the game is restarted in the centre square). It's quite suspenseful for the crowd since we don't know when the siren will sound in a close game. Anyhow, great video! Love your stuff.

Wooodvillie West Torens lost by one point. Part of the rule that you did not talk about is the Captain is the only person that can call for the count. The Eagles bench was calling for the count and did not get it . North won the grand final the next week. North start the next year four points in last place and they finshed at the bottom of the ladder

Another weird rule that the AFL has (or had?) is that for a grand final if the scores are tied by the end of the game, then they don't have an overtime period, or penalty shootout like normal sports do, but they play the whole game again the next week. This caused controversy during a recent grand final where the scores ended up being tied and they had to redo the whole grand final the week after which annoyed everyone.

Potential rule idea.. so in the NHL (well, all hockey leagues) when a team is getting a penalty and doesn't possess the puck the opponents can pull their goalie for an extra attacker. But there's something wrong here.... if they score the penalty is erased since they already had a man advantage....but they didn't have a extra player... just an extra "skater". The solution needs to be either: 1. If you do score the other team still gets the penalty (my personal preference) OR...2. the other team actually does get an extra player who can just jump over the boards WITHOUT the goalie needing to come to the bench....and then if they do score it was on an actual man advantage.
