Ultimate Downdraft Table Build

  • Published: 02 November 2019
  • Woodworking sucks better with the ultimate downdraft table. Now I can sand cutting boards all day long without wearing a mask. I modified my dust collection system in a previous video to accommodate the new 6" connection and flexible hose. I start with a section of SCH40 6" PVC pipe that is used for the manifold. The design incorporates my 5/8" DIA soft silicone rubber bumpers for the work surface. The super grippy silicone provides effective vibration control and protects the wood surface from marring. I made the top part removable so that if a tool or pencil falls inside I can just lift off the top and retrieve it. The dust collector I have is a 3hp impeller type which provides over 2000 CFM capacity. The first sanding test was a success. Air flow distributed evenly across the entire surface. I will sanding many cutting boards in the breeze. ending music by soundcloud.com/theinfiniteis

the silicone work surface is incredible. I had been designing this for a couple years. had the bumpers custom made to spec. not so simple but wait for the demo.

Brilliant build if you have a few hundred dollars for material and a few thousand dollars worth of machinery. can think of half a dozen ways to do the same thing ( suck dust up ) might not be as pretty but will do the same job alot cheaper in Time and Materials.

I used plastic snow fence from Home Depot but that left burnishes on the wood so I added those 2' x 2' kids rubber interlocking play matts and cut 3" diameter holes with the hole saw.  It still worked.  All I needed to do was change direction of the dust, not suck a gallon of paint from the shelf.

also, i would run a smaller diameter hose the to sander which would eliminate the need for either the dust bag on the device itself or a vacuum connection.

I am also going to use this table for routing which is going to produce a lot of heavier chips that might get stuck on the inlet screen which is there to prevent tools and pencils from falling into the system. the upright position will make it easier to maintain the inlet screen and airflow is less constricted. I will have to manually vacuum out the inside periodically which I am fine with. with this configuration the heavier chunks of debris will likely fall to the side as opposed to getting stuck on the inlet which is efficient for production.

Been woodworking now for around 50 years and I have 2 tools in my workshop made in china. Didn't buy ether one. Your table is good looking But like other people say you went twice around the barn to get to the house. A lot of over kill. I have two rooms in my shop each 6" by 10' One just for sanding and the other for finishing each has there own exhaust blower.

Also, for the love of God, lose the gloves when your on a machine. Those things will turn a booboo into a career ending injury. I've watched it happen.
