Can you really call it a straight "horror" movie? My feelings tell me no. It's definitely a new type of genre that brings out a lot of f'ed up scenes.

have you seen the director's cut??

      • Alexandros Alexandropoulos

If you watch Director's Cut it's WAY better and shines as what it really is: a break-up movie! I liked it more than Herediatry which was a little bit below my expectations.

I like the way your outfit gives a nod to the florals, primary colours and folk art of the movie!

I have to say that i like midsommar better than hereditary. the picture and setting is just so pleasant and inspiring. the WTF stuff is kinda in your face but it is nothing new to horror scene if you know what i mean. the breakup and grief undertone makes this movie a very compelling experience. oh i really dig the story telling through the cult art. which makes it even more scary somehow...

Привіт, Маріанна. Як справи? This movie is discounted on PRIME for Halloween 2019. I watched it there. It was unexpected. I loved Hereditary, a much better film. This one is also good! Unsettling is perfect description. Loved the movie! Loved the review!

I found this movie absolutely stunning. Far more surefooted than Hereditary (which I thought was incredible). My favourite of 2019, by far. So very, very far.

This might be the worst film I've ever seen that everyone seems to love (maybe that can be a topic of one of your future vids - movies you didn't like that everyone loves). I didn't like any of the characters, even when a character has gone thru that crazy trauma in the beginning, i found all the characters to be so annoying. Too much walking and wandering around, pseudo artsy overhead shots, nothing was explained except "oh these are just weird ass people" and the explicit stuff was just... Gratuitous. The only thing they got right was what tripping on shrooms is like. I guess I'm just not into aster's shtick. Rewatched hereditary and tho I liked it at first, the second time around I grew to dislike it. Oh well. There's always parasite.

It's an MK Ultra attack on the Swedish people and their culture. As if mass migration warfare were not enough. Kick them when they're down, yeah!

As sick as cults are, the accepted world religions, i.e. monotheism, started out as cults and the real-life horror of having one culture violently eradicated then replaced with another under those religious authorities is beyond comprehension.

Dani never grieved. She ran from the horror, avoided the pain, and replaced her dead romantic relationship for the stronger 'new family' found in Sweden. Ultimately, she became ensnared in another doomed relationship and she accepted her fate of being stuck. That's tragic. Being kidnapped into a killer cult/family is horrifying. I think it irrelevant whether or not the film is 'scary.'

You should see Director's cut, there are scenes about the couple arguing that highlights that it is a break up movie, there you can see how mean christian was...it makes more sense to me

Interesting! I can definitely see the breakeup theme in the theatre cut of the film, but the grief and death stuff stood out to me a lot more. Very interested in seeing how the Director's cut works!

One of the rare perfect reviews about Midsommar, i liked this movie (my best 2019 till now). This is not a scary one but so disturbing and it will put on the uncomfortable zone, i had dreams (nightmare?) About it too. I definitely prefer this type of movies.

I just watched Midsommar a few nights ago. I liked a lot of aspects: cinematography, pacing, performances, the setting / situation, and more. However, I felt as though - once the premise was established - that it was an easy write. Since there were little-to-no rules established or revealed for the cult-community's beliefs, all Ari Aster had to do was create shocking, creative ways to kill off characters. Maybe I'm missing something - and I still don't think it's a bad film - but it did seem like it was held together very loosely, which made the ending somewhat deflating (for me).

Impression Blend For me the part when she says “what’s that?” and points at the cabin I wasn’t sure what made her ask about it at that exact moment until I watched with better sound quality you can actually hear the moaning and that’s what she turned to look at hence her facial expressions changing. Also the score is amazing.

Hope you saw the director’s cut. Btw I loathed “Hereditary” and was hesitant in seeing this until I saw a piece on Aster carefully researching pre-Christian Scandinavian rituals & rites and his purpose in turning Western bias on tribal savagery on it’s head. I was sold. As someone who’s suffered though many, many codependent relationships, this was an incredibly cathartic break up film for me.

For a younger generation. This film actually raises the bar to a whole new level. It's that good. But on the other side of the coin 1/2 of our generation don't get it due to a strange social atrophy of short attention spans provisional self confidence and plain old fashioned stupidity. This film is actually playing 5D triple grand master chess and for thouse of us who play. I know we enjoyed it. Thanks... just my opinion. Ok YouTube bring on the hate

Just a minor note here, it's pronounced "pay-gan" actually, not "pee'gan"....there is almost no actual "pagan" anything in the film...for those who are thinking they may learn something about pagans, they won't...not one little thing...I was married on the Summer Solstice (i.e. Midsummer) which is the longest day of the year, the day of the Sun...celebration and birth and good health are among its myriad of meanings. I am also pagan in lifestyle. Keep in mind, this is a horror and the creator seems to have used all sorts of ancient symbols and is counting on the viewer not knowing the meaning of any one of them...just as the creator doesn't seem to know the meanings of any of them either as he has used them inappropriately. It is indeed a fairy tale that takes our original healer and doctors and turns them into modern day Christians who, world-wide, rape as many as 1 million kids per year....that's a truer horror story mind you. Regardless, this movie contains nothing useful if looking for something meaningful...it's meaningless.

I absolutely agree with you regarding the characters other than the main cast. My problem with this movie is the characters fails to carry the narrative through later in the films. For example, in Princess Mononoke by Hayao Miyazaki, the narrative was driven by the characters, and their decision. The moral of Ashitaka, the ambition of San and the determination of Lady Eboshi carried the film from beginning to the end. Even the forest god itself is very well developed. Most of the characters are not disposable. In this film, you could eliminate the British couple and change the numbers needed for sacrifice, you would have no problem with the plot or the narrative. It may be a motion picture but it is still another form of narrative. Narrative without coherent and concise narration ultimately became lethargic. Again, in Princess Mononoke, if you just want to enjoy a film without having to dig deeper into its symbolism, or motif, you can; and if you want go deeper to decipher its plot, characters design, symbolism, motif, subtext, you still can. I can't say the same about this film though. In fact, you can compare this film to a new Korean thriller film "Parasite" you will be what big different a coherent script can make. In 'Parasite' there are EIGHT main casts and all have depth.

Okay Marianna my second comment after having seen the film. It arrived in Tbilisi today July 25th. I was highly impressed. I thought the themes of the film were understated, hidden in the unsettling texture of the film. I think Ari Aster has a lot more going on here than is noticeable on a first viewing. So I will certainly be watching this several times to clarify my thoughts on it. Interestingly here in Georgia several people came with under 17 year old kids. And by the time of a certain ritual they were leaving en masse from the theatre. Georgia never went through the Seventies the way Western Europe and America did, as I'm sure you know. Thus they never got that spike of really disturbing films like the horror films of the Seventies or foreign films like Salo or La Derniére Femme. I think these folks were expecting the usual Blumhouse production or other more predictably enjoyable horror film. But I was entranced. I felt Ari was questioning something very deeply. But the big question I have about the pagan cult was this: Was he saying you can't go back to the past? Or was he saying this is actually the future? But I have many questions. And there is indeed a certain smile I shall never forget. Et tu Marianna?

If you watch the movie again, chances are you'll pick up on things you didn't see before. I picked up on things that go on during the psychedelic trips that I didn't pick up on my first time watching.

There are gore sites on internet where you can see genuine videos and pictures e.g. train or traffic accident victims, and you can definately tell that this movie's SFX's are VERY realistic. I bet the film crew has done their homework by watching some similar stuff.

The analogy of being on a trip and feeling trapped to the characters feeling helpless and coasting through life rather than facing up to hard truths is perhaps the one interesting thing. But I might be giving it too much credit. The whole thing could almost be imagined as part of Dani’s trip at the beginning of the film.

I thought it was disappointing and way overhyped by the press - nothing more than the same-old-same-old “college kids travel/lured to such-and-such a place expecting a great time, get trapped in a deadly nightmare instead” routine, just given a different look which is making critics all - for lack of a better term - wet their pants over it (and not out of fear). :/

Actually, with this film I honestly share the popular theory that everything that happens once they reach the village is really nothing more than a big long hallucination Dani was having after first drinking the tea.

The camera quality is too good now a days and the old grainy look of older movies adds to it that fear. I enjoyed it, though.

She uses the same trope as Pelle does with Dani, as in, they both share an experience of family loss. It's a way a cult can try to connect with you on an emotional level when you're weak with grief and I think Aster may be highlighting that.
