Mariners management has, and always will be, the problem for the franchise. For whatever reason, it's attracted GM's that seek profit, not championships. It's 2019, and we are still seeing impoverished Oakland outmaneuver us. The Mariners are wealthy, have a great stadium, and loyal fans, but the team never gets close. The exciting years of the late 90's in the Kingdome are long, long over. At least the Seahawks figured it out

the 2001 season was an epic failure- They barely beat a Cleveland team in the ALDS, and were destroyed by NY in a series that was never close. Its sad the fanbase refers to this as their magical season. If this organization had expectations like the Yankees, like Duke Basketball or other organizations that expect to win, they will learn not to be controlled by ownership accepting fact that they came close. Real shame, and very difficult to root for this organization who really has no incentive to win since they make money hand over fist, despite not selling out.

116 wins season and all they got was a stupid shirt. Also even the Nats made it to the series and won.

            That's kind of sad.

I do hope this team will appear in their 1st World series of their own just like the Washington Nationals are doing.

As of 2019, Game 5 of the 2001 ALCS vs the Yankees is still the LAST postseason game that the Mariners have played. Last time that happened George W Bush was in the first year of his presidency and Shaq & Kobe had led the Lakers to their 2nd straight NBA title.

Congrats to the Mariners for now being the only MLB Team today to never play in the World Series. How could you not go to the World Series being 70 games above .500 ????

I only really pay attention to football when the Seahawks are good. I only pay attention to basketball and hockey when Seattle has a team. But I will always be a Mariners fan, even if they go 0-162.

I watched a game where the Indians came back from a 12 runs down to WIN against Seattle (8/5/01). I'm no expert but I HAVE to think that game showed where the HEART of Seattle was and that it was fundamentally GONE. It had to be DEMORALIZING watching that happen after being up by SO many runs...and it was LATE in the game when the tribe made their push and came back on them.

Originally, I am from Seattle. I go to college in Illinois with several Chicago kids, mostly all Cubs fans. When they won in 2016, the first thing I asked each and every one of them was "are you finally willing to concede the Mariners are the most cursed team in baseball?" This is a team that last made the playoffs when I was 4 years old and in preschool, and right now I'm a 5th year student in college. A baby born on the day of the last Mariners playoff game would be month and a half way from being legally able to vote in the US (and they're definitely not making it this year).

To be honest, it's one thing if the team was a regular season juggernaut but couldn't win in the playoffs. But since that 03 season, the Mariners have had 5 winning seasons (07, 09, 14, 16, and 18), and 4 of them they had genuine chances to be a playoff team (all but 09). What happened? The A's either got hot and stole the Wild Card spot, or they played spoiler against Seattle. To be honest, I hate the A's more than any other team, including the Yankees and Angels, even though I respect the hell out of their general management (ownership not so much). The 07 team blew a Wild Card lead in August, the 14 team was eliminated on the last day of the season because they had a great rotation but one good hitter (Robinson Cano), the 16 team started well, tumbled horribly in June, and went on a hot streak only to be eliminated on the second to last day of the year, and the 18 team blew an 8.5 game lead in the Wild Card standings, falling from 24 games over .500 at the time in July to 16 over at the end.

This is the first time they've tried to attempt a legitimate rebuild where they tear everything down in a while, though, so I have some level of hope. Not much, though.

To Mike... I think you've done a really good job here. Especially, from 4 minutes on.
I look at the Mariners now and basically the same ownership is there running the team as a Consortium.
I've been a season-ticket holder since 1996 and gave them up this year because I'm just tired of the product that ownership runs out onto the field. With this team it's never been the GM's fault or the coaches fault.
Now, what you didn't cover was the nagging injuries to both Edgar and Bret Boone towards the tail end of of the season in September.
This was the heart of their order. And if my memory serves me correctly, Edgar had a nagging groin injury and Boone had issues with a severely bruised heel that would that would not cure itself. And this showed up in their postseason performance. As good as Aaron Sele was during the 2001 season he was not a big game picture. He did not bring his best game to those playoffs. Pitching is everything in the postseason.
So to sum up the first part, if we had a healthy Edgar and Brett it may have been different. They didn't rake in September like they did most of the Season.
However what you did nail is the ownership and how they have continued to mismanage the franchise for over a decade and I finally gave up this year.
