It should be noted, the late 90's was also when Wayne Huizenga completely ruined the Miami Dolphins.

As someone that went to the games, and was a huge Marlin's fan growing up, watching this still hurts. 2 greedy managers, multiple fire sales, getting duped for a stadium no one wanted, and watching these owners cash out with millions/billions...

Setting aside any considerations other than business, Wayne Huizenga made a really foolish choice. Fans will come out for a winner, but there is often a lag before awareness of success on the field takes hold with the general public. If he had just run that same team back the next year and marketed them as the defending champs, there's no doubt that ticket sales would have climbed significantly and kept climbing as long as they were at least competitive. Within just a few years, that would also have put him in a much better position when negotiating local TV and radio contracts which are key to a baseball team's profitability. Finally, the combination of the above would have led to him getting a lot more than $150 million whenever he eventually sold. I suppose that to a billionaire it wouldn't have mattered much in the end, but his loss was also the city of Miami's and the Marlins have never really recovered from what he did to the team and the pattern of salary-dumping that he started.

Wayne did what I would have done.  He didn't want to lose money slowly over multiple years, so he went all in to see if Florida fans would support his team and they didn't.  So he sold the team as soon as possible and let the next guy take the financial loss which did happen as Wayne predicted.  He was a very smart owner and he deserves credit for being so.  South Florida residents are to blame for not supporting the team.  Also most of you should be aware that almost half of the people who live in Florida are snow bird senior citizens that live in other cities and only live in Florida for the winter months.  Wayne knew this and that is why he did what he did.  Bravo Wayne.

Wayne Huizenga was a businessman. He made a fortune off exceptional business decisions, so to act surprised that he would do the same with the Marlins is either shortsighted or sentimental.
He made great money from the sale, which is all he wanted to do. It broke hearts, but he was doing exactly what he always did.

It’s not “greed” to not want to finance a super team out of your pocket....Marlins fans are actually insanely lucky that owners were willing to do that twice. They have one of the smallest fan bases/revenue streams in the sport and Huizenga basically spent like he was Steinbrenner to win in ‘97.

One could make the argument that the 1993 expansion teams Florida and Colorado form the least-successful expansion class ever in any sport. Neither one has ever won a division title, the Marlins have 2 playoff appearances and the Rockies have 4; the Marlins have had 21 losing seasons and the Rockies 18. The fact that the Marlins have won it all in each of their 2 appearances tends to overshadow just how unsuccessful a franchise they've truly been. And the Rockies have not been any better, they just have much better fan support.

In 2020 they should go about 72-90 and continue to spread hope. Then in 2021 they will shock people by spending money to help their new young core and actually compete .and they will be in a position to compete for several years.

Only problem is the Braves are in the same position. Set to be good for at least the next four seasons.
