@Madeline Fleming both, take your body weight and times it by 12 that is the calorie intake to maintain your weight. To gain more weight increase that number to loose weight decrease that number. Be proactive in following your food groups and portions. Avoid fast food, they tend to make your diet more protein dependant. Try to remember too much of a good thing is bad for you; If your use to 6 or 7 cups of coffee try to cut back to 1 or 2. It's the same with alcohol if you go out occasionally, energy drinks, sugar and salt. This is just basic advice I've learned, diffinatly consult a nutritionist or dietitian for more in depth meal plans, because if you find that something is not working out as expected they will help you adjust it to fit you because everyone is different.

You said it doc, carbs, especially refined, are the enemy! So the best route to follow is keto! It is restrictive, but I find by "cheating" on occasion, things are all OK! And my blood works are superb, especially my triglycerides! I would typically "cheat" by having some sourdough toast once a week. I also eat fruit and obviously veg, but less fruit than before. And LOTS of fatty fish!

A 90 day challenge may have been a better option. You were hit with a lot of the symptoms that people go through when they change their diet dramatically. The fatigue normally goes away after a couple weeks and the gas is cause by a high fiber diet which comes from the greens. You didn't really get time to find a balance that worked for you.

I have tried Vegan (the plant based whole foods version) several times because I want the health benefits and I have also suffered severe gas and bloating every time I try it. I also have a job where this is not acceptable. If someone can recommend a remedy for the gas I would be willing to try again. Thanks

i honestly think it's easier if you're vegan for ethical reasons (which is really the only way to go vegan, what he did was a plantbased diet, but yk) because then you dont want to eat that terrifying whole dead fish that woman had on her plate

If I wasn't a vegan I think I would try a Mediterranean pescatarian diet. I love being vegan though. I just lost 22 pounds doing keto vegan for 3 months. I have lost a total of 34 lbs. since July by going back to eating a vegan diet after 6 years of eating meat and diary. I will never go back to eating the standard American diet.

I'd encourage you to take a challenge with mostly whole foods with very little to no processed foods in the mix. This is cheaper, healthier and a more responsible diet you could recommend to your patients.

And yes eating plant-based Whole Foods is the healthiest. I understand you want to eat fish but they bioaccumulate environmental toxins, you can't escape the Mercury, bmaa, dioxins, and the fact that they don't have fiber or phytonutrients so you're crowding out more nutrient pack Foods, and they have oxidized dietary cholesterol, heme iron, saturated fat, and fish are being over fished so you're contributing to dead zones, if you get farm-raised fish they're going to have high omega-6 ratios so they're going to be inflammatory, just eat plant-based Whole Foods and you'll be fine, and to replace fish just eat nuts and chia seeds that are milled and flax for your essential fatty acids. Sure if you're eating predominantly plant-based you may be able to get away with eating animals and their secretions occasionally but why would you want to when you don't need to, the more you get away from it the more you realize it is disgusting, unnecessary, and moderation isn't good to your health either if you look at more seasoned doctors and scientists they will back to all of this up

It's well known that sometimes people on a vegan or vegetarian diet will lose the ability to process animal based fats and protein and can end up with GI issues if they ever have a cheat day or eat a dish with meat by-product. This is actually one of the main reasons vegans are so concerned with contamination because even trace amounts of animal fat can cause physical issues for someone who has gone on a completely vegan diet.

                                                                        • Puma Houangvilay

Some will automatically fail. At least you stuck with 30 days. Since every body is different, sometimes the body takes longer than 30 days to improve. I struggled the first few months, mainly because I wasn't fully prepared. Going extremely strong not eating meat over five years now. In contrast, not everybody can go on a vegan diet due to certain food allergies. There is no best diet out there. It depends on an individual. If you bring in the environmental and ethical values, then the wisest choice is vegan. Of course, that's a different topic.

But please please please please give us dietitians (or in my case future dietitian) some credit. The problem with finding a "nutritionist" to help with dietary issues is that anyone can call themself one, even if they have no nutritional training. Your friendly local dietitian on the other hand has gone to a 4 year college for nutrition, food science or dietetics; completed a dietetic internship; and passed a national exam. These are the people, along with your doctor or primary care provider, that people should be going to for help. Thanks!

A thing that actually annoys me is that quite a lot people doesn't know correctly how the meet is produced. They don't know how the slaughtering works and everything. People have to understand how it works.
