I like slow-paced films. They seem more real and genuine. You get to spend more time with the characters, their conversations, their lives. The film's atmosphere soaks you in much more. Take The Fellowship of the Ring or a New Hope. We spend 45 minutes with the characters and their environment before the adventure begins.

Some of the best movies in the world are slow films. Citizen Kane is pretty slow, so is The Godfather. But people see it as a flaw for some reason.

I had a nanny growing up so this film really resonated with me. Unlike the movie she was always a part of the family (what Cleo is finally acknowledged as by the mother in the end of the film). I hated how the mother treated the staff but then you begin to see that it's just the household being caught in the crossfire of the deteriorating marriage. I love how this family drama and Cleo's personal problems all take place in the backdrop of societal upheaval. You see how the effects leak into their everyday lives before fully disrupting it. It was an incredible film and a beautiful experience.

I just saw this movie last night on Netflix and it was as if time travel was possible for once, a world came alive on my hands.

It's sad to see the negative reviews, even Disgusting to read comments from people who are from Mexico, that claim to not have understood the film and take pride in the ignorance of not understanding it? I call it bluff..
I personally was moved by the film and it reminded me of the bitter connection between women and that the pain we feel that only makes us stronger.
I'm of Mexican descent, born and raised in California so I treasure the story being told, that of a Native Woman, who typically gets shoved into a Caste system. A woman who bears the burden of the violent actions from Men. It's a story that's Universal, because it moves the viewer into reflecting their own pain and suffering. "We are always on our own" a line said in Solace. Considering the state in which Mexico's political system is criminally crushing its people, I doubt anyone is left who's unfamiliar with pain and suffrage.. I suppose that those who make fun of the film refuse to accept their position in that caste system.

Story wise I don't like it, as a Mexican myself I know the culture and the time period, I wanted to actually see more of that, but alas we didn't get that, instead we get a very on the line story with flat characters that don't change in any way throughout the film, yes photography is sometimes amazing but that could fit better as a short movie featuring just those takes, after seeing this video, my perspective remains the same, actually this is the first time I don't agree with your point of view, I like some of Cuaron's works, but this one, it's not for me

That is fine to repeat to get your point across, but you need to recognize the aspects that make it beautiful not how the movie is made to be interpreted. in that case ur point was your guess is a best as the directors which is a point to make that its memories not beauty. perhaps life but still not explaining beauty. If you want to know what is beaty in movies explaining life or memory then the tree of life is your answer. I felt like Roma is more culture and life driven, though memeory could be in there but even memory can depict how culture worked. However, since this is a movie to our own interpertation you have good points all together to its meaning. I lpve the film and I think it deserves the oscars it had gain and really this ideaology isn't new but different. If you see the tree of life that will better your understanding of the film Roma because of the ideaology or philosophy behind the tree of life. there is more symbolism and meaning then roma however Roma is raw to its techniques and to its filming. The only critizism about Roma is the lack of music, however, music doesn't have to be in film but only suggested. Music with film amplified the moments that is happening in the film, but in Roma the music is the culture or memory in that case. that silence can still be a powerful meaning to a song.

I am more of a literature than film person, but literary elements can sometimes transcend onto screen so beautifully. For me, that was what I admired about the film; Cuaron's purposeful inclusion of highly meaningful shots. Masterful.

Thank you so, so much for this. I saw it twice in an actual movie theatre, but the second time I was with a sparse, restless audience, post-Oscars. "Is that it?" was the common reaction I heard. Personally, I was even more impressed the second time - being caught up in the story on first viewing, I didn't think, "holy crap, that's one shot," or "how the hell did he DO that?" The second time I could focus on the artistry as well as the story, and I think it's an extraordinary film. I'm very grateful for your take on it.

I mean, you can't tell me you weren't emotionally stimulated by something if you're out of shape. Well, of course you're not going to be emotionally stimulated by anything, there's 70 lb of blubber on your body. You should probably fix that first. I'm talking about myself here bro.

Yeah, it's sooo breathtakingly cool - I love how we linger on a guy with is dick out after the first 30 minutes.

How this won best directing, and "Carol" lost in 2016 is beyond me. If you have to be of a certain nationality to thoroughly enjoy a film, then it's not a universally great film.
