The writing was atrocious. Given that there was no kiss, I interpreted Jaime's last scene with Cersei as siblings comforting each other rather than lovers comforting each other, but your words make me question that. D&D's writing is a disgrace to the franchise.

Melting King's Landing would have looked awesome. Harrenhal and how it looked in the show really made an impact on me.

Pew pew pew, loved it. Smaug's fire blew up buildings. Liked the spires of wildfire in the ordinary fire..

But Jaime's story...OMG! The guy SHOWED us he changed! We were following his development through the years and his regret, not the same man anymore, VISIBLY different, we SAW it with Bran two episodes ago. :) But naah, kill him, he's a Lannister. Soooo bad. Ridiculously bad.

The dragon fire lookd like a laser beam. It brought the castle down so easily.
If I'm not wrong, I remember the walls of Harrenhal were left "half-melted" by Aegon and Balerion. But in the show, it's like the fire is a sci-fi laser beam... Either that or the walls of the Red Keep are made out of Lego.

Great points. Although, you forgot that Sandor just let Cersei pass for no reason.

Seems like you burnt this episode far more than Dany did KL.
Although, they didn't portray Jaime's char arc very well, I think twins always having a connection to one another, especially incestual ones is by no means hard to understand. No matter how much he may try to move on from Cersei, even in the books, all it would take is a single switch to bring him back to her.

To what extent do you think Jon will actually interact with Dany in the books? I’ve never foreseen an intimate relationship between the two of them, or a gratifying team-up at Winterfell. What do you think?

Thank you so much Linda... I am drinking here too trying to recover from this episode... After all the big reveal of Game of Thrones is that D & D never read George R R Martin.

Having a black dragon...and losing one pretty easily....it would be logical to strike at night at the fleet and defenses/scorpions.
But hey...we already had a night fight so...

Also i do not understand deny s curvy way to the red keep...needlessly burning civilians...instead of just going straight for the red keep burning it down.

I mean...every fifth scene was understandable to me...4/5 were not.

Bell memes ahoy! When it comes down to it, the writers failed to earn the spectacle of Daenerys destroying the city because — as with Anakin Skywalker turning to the dark side — her character has pivoted too suddenly. Yes, folks, this is characterisation on a par with the Star Wars prequels, God help us.

There were scenes in episode 5 that point to what could have been had the show dramatised the emerging conflicts and psychology of its key players properly. Unfortunately, the show has failed quite badly on this front. The fizz has been taken out of the characters and the conflict, and so all you are left with is Daenerys Quasimodo, triggered by some bells.

People call her "Mad Queen!!!" because she burned the city, but everyone was fine with Tywin when he put the whole city to the sword the day of the sack of King's Landing; Robert was even thankful for that... He said "this is war"...
Kinvara foretold that the dragons would "purify non-believers by the thousands"...

they're trying to be clever with the white horse as the pale horse of the apocalypse.
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him.

Do we know what's the rush here? More and more this is seeming like a a story being told by a story teller bored of the story he's telling. are D&D just over it? I mean this series basically prints money for HBO so why not make the final season a little longer and do these characters some justice. To your point at 16:24 (the north men don't listen to John) I'd say that once the unsullied saw that Dany was going to continue the attack even though the city had already surrendered, they took that as a command to raze the city completely. When that happens the city is looted, the women are raped, the whole place is pillaged and most everyone is killed or enslaved. that's why we didn't want her to raze the city.

With the show ending next week, and the Winds of Winter not coming out this year, I continue to get happier and happier that George gets his story back, and can go back to telling us his tale unfettered from the scrutiny of the "show audience," and the "show expectations." He always says the show is a separate thing. What we are seeing now is the story the show told. Next, we will get the story as George wants to tell it. That feels pretty good.

I'm pretty sure that the Starbuck's cup was foreshadowing, IE: D&D were trying to tell us that Dany's had too much caffeine.

Hello from France (sorry for the mistakes).
Thank you for your very interesting and clever review which is quite on point.
                                                    I entirely agree with you.
I'm deeply disappointed with this last season.
                                                    Jon the hero is useless,
Daenerys is now the big big bad (so bad that the Night King is ridiculous in comparison)
Cersei is now a whinning victim, who dies without paying any of the bill of her bad deeds. And... by the way, she's been pregnant for months, but she has no belly...Seriously ? What happened to the timeline ? (I'm laughing)
Jaime... I'm so angry about this one... he was my favourite character. His redemption arc is entirely ruined.
Well, I'm stopping here, since you said already everything, and the list is too long.
I feel betrayed. I hope that GRRM will do better with his books.

Most people who desire one thing very strongly in the books do not get what they want -- just look at everyone else who has tried to get revenge! But it is possible that among the notes was "the Hound and the Mountain kill each other". That said, I expect something more from it.

But, this will be G.R.R Martin's end as well, he has said so. They have rushed there and yes, the shortcuts make it seem all weird and nonsensical but this is what will happen in the books, she will destroy everything. I mean, yes a lot if not much of what D&D have been writing is total garbage and a rushed way to finish a story they have no idea how to finish but, the big strokes will be in the books, so I would love to hear your opinion on that. I mean, I see Martin's intentions, what we humans do to each other will always be far worse than what death itself can promise, we create hell for ourselves and we do it in the reality that we inhabit. Anyway, would love to hear your impressions on the end game of the whole story. Obviously Martin will make it seem far more cohesive and that is why its taking so long, it must be really hard to keep all the characters to fulfil their archetypes in a way that makes sense and to make all the story arcs end with the burning of King's Landing.

There will probably also be more dragons around, not all on Dany's side. That said, I do think Daenerys will ultimately be a ruthless conqueror who lives up to her family motto. But it will be built towards in a sensible way, not making her go nuts because of some bells.

There are so many disappoint points (no valonqar, Arya coming for nothing, etc, etc....).
I totally agree with your analysis, especially the point where Daenerys wants to kill Cersei and she didn’t go directly to where she is!! I mean she can ask Drogo to make a « Dracarys » to kill only Varys and not all the people around him, she could just go to the Red keep and make the same...
The same regarding the evolution of the story, even if GRRM has the same path for his books, I mean, I know it will be coming in a much more better way.

What is extraordinary is Varys, who made Tyrion escaping King’s landing through secret passages, didn’t give this tip to Daenerys to avoid the killing of all the innocents? She couldn’t send Grey worm to kill Cersei using these secrets tunnels...? I always thought the dragons on the crypts were an indication from where they will invade and kill Cersei.

And Jon is only able to say « She is my queen ». His script should have been easy to learn for this episode. He is not speaking anymore. He is not even able to prevent his men to rape and kill innocent people. Why everyone starts beginning crazy?
Then they are re-using the wood toy burnt again, well, once is emotional, twice is just lack of imagination...

Why ALL characters are not going out of their destiny and coming back to what they were from the beginning (Arya fleeing King Landing afraid like when she witnessed her father dead, Jaime back to his sister, Jon about to say nothing, Daenerys just has her father even after she did all what she did...)

The bells just did not make sense, and seemed to completely negate her character arc. “Breaking the wheel”, indeed. 😠 I sure hope the books aren’t going in this direction, at least not without a lot more nuance and meaning. I feel like several character arcs were killed off in an alley like Barristan Selmy this episode.
