“The Double,” a vital moment for Seattle Mariners baseball, needs a deep rewind | 1995 ALDS

  • Published: 01 October 2019
  • The 1995 ALDS between the Seattle Mariners and the Wild Card-winning New York Yankees was a big deal. The Yankees were playing their first postseason baseball in well over a decade. The Mariners felt like they were playing for their home: A deal for a new stadium in Seattle depended in some part on the team and its fans proving they were worth the investment.

After New York won the first 2 games at home, Seattle rallied to tie the series, and it all came down to the bottom of the 11th inning. The Mariners trailed by one run with one out, runners at the corners, and slugger Edgar Martinez at the plate.

This episode of REWINDER investigates the backstory of this moment -- the stadium drama, the Yankees' prior history, and the paths each Mariner took to participating in that critical moment.

It's one of the most exciting events in baseball history, and it meant so much to so many people.

As a couple people have pointed out, the Griffey catch clip included in here is NOT the one in which he broke his wrist. Dumb mistake. We're breaking Seth's wrist as punishment.

Hey guys. I’d love to see a Deep Rewind on the Capitals finally beating the Penguins in overtime of game 6 in 2018. That was a huge moment for the franchise, and ultimately led to their first Cup win in 44 years of history.

I was born in 1975 and I'm a Phillies fan so by the time I really got into baseball in the early 80s the Yankees were never any good. I never thought of them as a great franchise until the late 90s when they started winning again. If you would've asked me about the Yankees when I was a kid I would've said they were terrible. Once I learned the history of baseball I realized that they were the greatest franchise in the history of the game. My friend was a Yankees fan and a huge Mattingly fan so I always felt bad for him because they never won when he was on the team. So my friend got tickets to go see the Yankees at Yankee stadium and he took me, and it was the rookie year for an up and coming shortstop. I remember seeing all these people wearing the same shirt with some guy named Jeter on it, and I remember saying to my friend, Who's this Jeter guy? But I pronounced it Jet-er like the plane. Well it wasn't long after that that I knew who he was and in 09 my friend just laughed as his Yankees and that Jet-er guy beat my Phillies ruining a dynasty in the making.

Man rewind the 2019 Nats starting 18-31...harper goes to philly (overrated anyways), the bullpen was trash then getting some players, won 8 straight games to finish the season,. Facing the brewers in the WC game losing in the 8 inning score some runs and beat them. Later they face 106 win dodgers team losing 3-1 tie the game with back to back HR against Kershaw even though he is the biggest choker in postseason history, Soto tie the game with 20 years old and the ball land to Mars. Then they sweep the cardinals in which they have an excellent 5 game series against Atlanta in the NLDS. You will see they will win the WS and beat Cole 1 game, and the dude hasnt lose a game since May.

It was a high scoring, back and forth nail-biter that went into overtime. The Astros eventually went on to win there first world series title. It's easily the best baseball game I've ever seen
