from experience in flight sims and similarly in sim racing things like this just become instinctual with practice, the less you think about it the better

Amazing progress, great instructors! I've had a go in a tough old military helicopter and it's like patting your stomach, rubbing your head, whistling a tune all whilst on a unicycle!

I had the chance to fly a commercial heli simulator when doing research for my bachelor's thesis. I knew which steering input controlled which motion, and I knew about the interlinking (do you say so?) between the axes and their movements. Yet it took about 10 seconds until we lay upside-down, on the rotor, about 8 m away from where we started.

I have a helo add on to my Pilot's license. I have hovered Bell 47, Huey, Enstrom, R-22, 2 different Baby Belle, Rotorway and I think a Hughes 269 (I was never sure the CFI was entirely off the controls) and two ultra light (254#) helicopters. The very easiest to hover was the ultra light ships. The very worst was the R-22. It seems the cyclic control feedback on the R-22 was nearly non existent. Even after more than 400 hrs helo time, I still want a CFI on board for my hovering in an R-22.

I remember sitting in kitty hawk with a friend of mine, and talking to a pilot who transitioned helicopter pilots over to airplanes. Airplanes are inherently stable. The wings even have dihedral(or a tilt) to them that helps keep their wings level. With an airplane you can pretty much set up the trim and turn the rudders to wherever you need to. Helicopters are inherently unstable. With a helicopter you need to be moving constantly. I will say though with airplanes you also have a clicking moment the instructors talked about here, and suddenly you can land and what not. Airplanes aren’t more dangerous than helicopters, helicopters are way more versatile though.

You need to counter every moment with another input/moment. They aren't like fixed wing aircraft with dihedral to the wings that lead to the craft having some self stabilization effect; helicopters just keep moving in the direction you pushed them until you counter that movement.
