Why Game Of Thrones Fell Apart At The End

  • It's almost impossible to end a hit show in a way that makes everyone happy. But thanks to rushed execution, frustrating character choices, and other inconsistencies, a number of diehard Game of Thrones fans are pretty annoyed with how everything shook out. Here's a spoiler-filled examination of what we think went wrong with the final season of Game of Thrones.

For the first five seasons, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were able to mostly follow Martin's books as a direct template, and many of the show's most beloved and infamous moments, including the execution of Ned Stark, and the Red and Purple Weddings, were directly out of the source material. Benioff and Weiss did make some welcome adjustments; in the fifth book, Tyrion wanders around for what feels like years before meeting Daenerys, whereas in the show, they team up pretty quickly, but for the most part, they stuck to the literal script in front of them.

However, once the show's fifth season ended, so did the source material; the next book in Martin's series, The Winds of Winter, is still unfinished. And once Benioff and Weiss ran out of source material, that's around the same time many fans started complaining about being unsatisfied with the handling of the show's overall story and writing, even though Martin himself guided them through the final acts of the series. Obviously Benioff and Weiss aren't without talent, since they built the show fans grew to love. But Martin is naturally better at manipulating his own story, and problems began to arise when the showrunners were left to their own devices.

It's understandable that, as Game of Thrones went on and became a bigger and bigger hit, HBO would want it to continue as long as possible. But in 2015, Benioff and Weiss had a public dispute with the network over how long it would run, expressing a desire to close out the show after just seven seasons. Even though Martin himself said the show should be at least 13 seasons, the showrunners and HBO eventually forged a deal for an eight-season run that would abbreviate seasons seven and eight; the former would last for seven episodes, while season eight would only consist of six.

Many fans critical of the show have come to proclaim that cramming years' worth of buildup and anticipation into a shorter set of episodes created a new set of problems, making it all the more baffling that the showrunners insisted on these short seasons. Without room to let the story breathe, the final batch of episodes felt really rushed. As a result, they stand in stark contrast to the show's earlier seasons that focused on epic journeys, character development, and long throughlines. Keep watching the video to see why Game of Thrones fell apart at the end!

@What ? It felt rushed to the point where it was like being force fed one ridiculous "twist" after another, most of them being completely nonsensical. The characters were unrecognizable, and apparently their propensity for stupid and uncharacteristic decisions was the driver to a planned finish that rang both hollow and bizarre.

It was like the characters and the world were replaced by dopplegangers in some sort of bizarro world simulacrum where everything that happened rung false. The dialogue was terrible, too. So no, more of the same conversation over and over would not have saved it.

I was left stunned, as were the majority of people, and then when I looked to see why, the answer seems obvious. They were in a rush. They literally burned it off in an actual inferno in a mad dash to get out of there, and in so doing they treated those who gave them these "more interesting opportunities" with contempt - namely the fans who paid them with the currency of attention for years, not to mention with their actual currency.

Maybe they just couldn't perform to the same calibre without source material, but that leaves me all the more stunned that HBO didn't hand the show off to other writers. How many talented writers would give a limb to finish that story? A lot, I'll bet.

So I would say the failure lies both with negligent and possibly incompetent writers, but equally with HBO brass. Whomever let this pass was clearly drinking the kool aid. I am guessing D&D must be kind of charismatic IRL for that to have happened. Strange, since staring off into space and saying "Dani kinda forgot about the Iron Fleet" is about as milquetoast and moronic as one could be under the circumstances.

The fact that Benioff apparently thought that such an explanation would actually fly probably speaks deeply of the current internal culture of HBO.

Coddled idiots and poor choices, to put it in less kind terms.

If y'all are looking for a satisfying ending that stays true to the character arcs and the storyline, please check out Macabre Storytelling here on youtube. Be sure to check out his Tyrion episode first! Instead of fixing the ending as a whole, he picks up where he feels each character arc went astray ( all sometime after season4) and tweaks it into perfection. He's currently on Episode 9 of his rewrites. You wont regret it!!

As a small Belgian published fantasy writer myself I have some remarks...
        1. What stupid leader sacrifices his whole cavalry in an useless charge on the army of the dead in the third episode? Cavalry is at his best in supporting infantry. And using your slingshots only once? Really??? They should kill their commander immediately for extreme incompetence...
        2. Everybody is constantly whining about the fact that danaerys must protect the innocent in Kingslanding but no one is smart enough to use the advantage of 'smuggling' hundreds or even thousands of soldiers, dressed as refugees, into the city. Ayra and Jamie did it and they got away with it. Even with their weapons. They could have opened the gates at night and take the city without the bloodshed.
        3. Why was it so important for Brann that John Snow knew his real past? It served no purpose, it killed their love for each other (incest) and only speed up the insanity and mistrust of Danaerys. As a writer I would suppose that our 'little sweet Brann', our big 'know it all' had a hidden agenda that lead him to his crowning. I wouldn't trust that little bastard anyway...

You can definitely tell things were rushed at the end and it’s a shame too because GOT was such a good show. It really annoys me that GRRM wanted 13 seasons to tell the story and the show writers wanted it to end soon. I mean the final season makes it difficult to rewatch the series again because you know the payoff isn’t good. I get you’re never going to please everyone, but there’s no need to ruin characters at the end. Dany had such a fast turn to madness. If they were going to have her go mad, at least let it be a slow turn. I just feel like it was such a waste of her character development because she spent so much time saying how she’d be different than her father, but then destroys an entire city a short time later. Jaime was a waste too. I didn’t understand why he went back for Cersei. It seemed like he felt she was a lost cause when he went to go fight for the living, but then changed his mind. Bran and Sansa came out of this looking bad too. Bran helped drive a wedge between Jon and Dany knowing what would happen. He also could’ve helped more with their fight against Cersei and that could’ve prevented some deaths. Sansa didn’t like Dany from the start and broke the vow she swore to Jon by telling Tyrion Jon’s secret. That was another thing that caused a lot more destruction. The writing was just so bad and they hurt so many characters. The Night King ended up being a waste of time. I mean it would’ve been better for a big fight with him and Jon given Jon was the one who encountered him the most. Arya should’ve been the one to kill Cersei too. They trained her to be an assassin, so she should’ve used those skills to sneak in to Kings Landing to get Cersei. I just hate that everything was rushed. I wish we could get a remake of the last season, but have it done right where they don’t butcher characters and it isn’t rushed.

Jaime should have killed his Cersei. It was prophesied and all the others came true. He was the younger brother that was foretold and not Tyrion. That would have been the right "twist" to the story arc and would have made sense to the audience.

Dany's story went right. It was the only way she could have ended that made sens to me.

They should have built up Bran a little more but iirc they stated in a previous season that he was going to be king. I can't remember the episode but he was talking with the old 3 Eyed Raven at the time.

I just don't understand why. Why did they stop caring? Why did they just want to end it so badly? HBO wanted it to go on much longer and so did George!! Why did D&D want to leave? It just doesn't make sense. You're at the healm of creating an entire FANTASY WORLD for people to immerse in and fall in love with and HBO is willing to give you all the artistic freedom you want, and you want to end it? Like what the fuck man? Was the millions of dollars just not enough?

I don't think it has as much to do with D&D's writing skills more so than the fact that they just rushed the last 2 seasons and it was impossible to coherently wrap up all those plot lines in the short amount of time they did it in. Because season 6 was not based on any book material yet it was still fantastic. Maybe not AS good as 1-4 but it was still epic in its own right.

If the dragon queen became queen, it would have to complicate all the other main character story lines and lengthen the series. Use your brains: killing everyone off kills all the story lines, so a quick ending! Think about everything that happened in seasons 6 & 7. They were pretty awesome. To get the true answer to what happened, it's obviously the writers and/or HBO. That is where the answer is. Rush the ending for TV's greatest series ever? End it in a hurry? Someone owns all the fans an explanation, and they are not getting it!

I think they managed to destroy chacters in 2 ways: rushing some plots (like Dany's) and turning them into idiots, like Varys and Tyrion (who became the most naive person in Westeros and lost all strategical habilities).

It's hard to narrow down what was wrong with season 8 into a single reason. But I guess if I had to: it would be to say the characters stopped being their characters. None of the shit they were doing made any sense. Jon Snow would have never stabbed Daenarys in the heart while kissing her.... Dany would have never just burned women and children alive like that for no reason...Jamie would not have crawled back to Cersei like a whimpering puppy after she tried to have him killed...Tyrion would not have been such a god awful adviser....Varys would not have acted so stupidly and conducted treason out in the open.... I could go on and on. it was all just so very stupid.

But it was rushed. Jeremy Jahns put it perfectly, this would of been perfect as a 10 season show to flush out more of what was going on in season 8. Have Danny rule for a while, watch her downfall as they intended it be. She definitely would of but heads with Sansa, queen in the north. Sansa definitely wouldn't of bent the knee. I remember saying in the beginning of the finale, there is enough here for a whole other season at least, maybe 2 lol I enjoyed it for what it was and didn't flop for me, there was just some wasted potential there which is alittle saddening. Mostly everything made sense to me, even Danny going all genocidle and John snow killing her. It was just on the rushed side and there could of been alot more epic story to tell. Danny is perfectly described by, you either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villian. They just rushed the whole becoming the villian part and would of been perfect for future episodes/seasons.

Flash back to scenes where they could have killed Bran or Jon or Sam but just walked right by. Show the images of the spiral pattern and the Targ banner. It would have made pretty much all of these problems go away. Since Arya screwed up the Night King's plan, Jon had to survive to kill her. The end.

Had they made it an extra season where we can see dany madness getting out of hand to justify jons choice.
