Because DnD believed their own hype and thought they was why the show was good. They pissed off George so he said fuck you write your own script and this is the result.

I think you're being too generous saying that Tyrion was on top of things during his time as the hand of the King. He was almost completely focused on Cersei and ignorant to the motivations of the other players. That allowed Littlefinger and Varys to run circles around him. I mean how smart could he be when he was handed a crossbow and told which secret passage leads to Tywin's room, but that he shouldn't go their and kill him, honestly. He brought down his own house with a bit of pushing in the right direction. He even continued to rely on his enemy after the fact, oblivious to how he had been manipulated. Tyrion has never seen the bigger picture about anything. He lives in a bubble where the only things that matter are those things that directly relate to himself or his past. He's not smart. Tywin had the right of it. He's cunning at best.

This is the problem with game of thrones. Seasons based off the book were so good that everyone assumed the bad writing was actually a plot. I suspect there's a hint of this in the books as well, everything has a theory when there's not necessarily one, but that's a consequence of how many years it's taking to get the last books.

D&D are incapable of clever thoughts without source material to point the way. GRRM was their GPS.

Interesting though I have an alternative theory, the show failed miserably at showing it but I think Tyrion with time felt slightly guilty of having killed Tywin. A couple of times he either said it or we can see that he feels guilty. We never saw him finding out Myrcella had being killed - that surely must have hurt deep for him since he was the one who sent her there -. Then with Tommen's death, I suspect he started feeling bad for Cersei and for Jaime: they both had lost all their children and their father, and on top of that there he was, assisting the one person who wanted to destroy them. Tyrion is clever but he is also a good person. My guess is that it is not that he stopped being clever but he was conflicted, split in two in a situation where regardless of the outcome, he had something to lose. He had pledged himself to Dany and he wanted to do that, but then that meant he also had to destroy his family - and he did love Jaime -. This is why - when Jon showed up with an alternative route - he wanted Dany to support Jon: that was an enterprise he could back without any personal conflict. He sought an alliance with Cersei because that was a way out, a way to avoid being "the monster" he thought everyone believed he was. It was love in the end... love is the end of duty.

Tyrion took over Barristan and Jorah as the military advisor. Everyone bashes him for not seeing Casterly Rock and the other strategic things he didn't see. That's not Tyrion's fault. That's Dany's fault for believing a man with little to no real world military experience. If this was Tyrion being clever and having some master plan then the writer's didn't do enough to reveal this to us.

As someone who has ran a DM where I ended up playing a party member, a war cleric with an incredible insight, I suspect they might have ran into the exact same issue I did... You need to figure out how to make things happen, without the character being able to get in the way of it. Like me, they decided that rather than outsmarting him, they would they would undermine him... Now for me, this was part of an evil god of corruption worming its way into his mind, warping his judgement and will, making him progressively less reliable, while also adding a ticking clock to the party's quest to defeat the big bad. For them, however... They just lobotomized him without actually letting us know they did so.

I think I figured it out. Tyrion didn`t suddenly become stupid. No, this is all part of a brilliant plan, masterminded by - Cersei! Think about it. Tywin wanted to force Cersei into a marriage she didn`t want. So Cersei had to get rid of her father. Killing him herself would be much to risky, so she arranged Tyrions escape and he kills Tywin for her. Then Tyrion seeks shelter with Daenerys, becomes one of her main advisers and sabotages her conquest of Westeros by giving her stupid advice (remember, he almost got her killed by the Harpys!). This was the second part of Cerseis brilliant plan. Yes, Tyrion is secretly working for Cersei. Oh Cersei, you brilliant bitch, it almost worked :-)

In some episodes there is stuff that is supposed to be breathtaking action scenes and stuff. But none of the actually impressive vistas are taken from the books. The outlandish architecture and artifacts, the enormous hosts and the overpopulated cities. So a choreographed fight scene shot in a single long take, that's something that the show will give you. But not something that is actually visually impressive, something that could not exist but the visual medium can fool you into believing it does.

Though Tyrion still totally got outsmarted when Cercei and Euron ambushed Asha, the Martells, Highgarden and abandoned Casterly Rock. It was a big bamble, because they were fucked if Daenarys headed straight towards King's Landing. Cercei knew Tyrion too well that he would try to not attack King's Landing directly. Not saying Tyrion should have done that, but he got outsmarted, and it was his fault that he forgot to predict Euron's movement. They knew Euron would side with Cercei and forgot about him everytime.
It is quite realistic though. Smart and witty politicians aren't necessarily good military strategists, there are many examples in history.

Tyrion is a true blue lannister. She used daenerys as a pawn. Daenerys should have never trusted a dwarf who killed his own father for sleeping with his prostitute. He is worse than cersei lol.
