39:00 I so HATED The Dark Knight. Aside from Ledger's performance and the cinematography, I found nothing else redeemable about that movie.

I agree, the only thing is sometimes a film being faithful is enhanced by the sourse material. There are definetly moments from IT chapter 2 that binging the book beforehand helped my enjoyment of it alot but I agree it shouldnt be the driving force of the movie

I think the only exception to having to watch something else to get a movie is if it is a sequel that the story is directly built upon the previous film.

@ Phillip Carbin if you liked the series, you will probably enjoy the comic. be warned they give the "smallvillle treatment" to cyborg superman but it brings in justice league members like wonder woman and batman in a pretty cool way.

some video game movies are easier to make as a movie: like a tomb raider or an uncharted. i havent seen the new tomb raider but i loved the original ones with Angelina Jolie and i am confident the in the works uncharted movie will be good. but they are kind of like indiana jones stories. i liked the first mortal kombat movie but i do recognize it could have been a more solid film. today i am sure we can get great visuals, they just have to work out how to tell the story in a movie format.

The only time you should read the book first is if you already wanted to read the book. Chances are, the book is the better experience, so it's better to not have the book spoiled than have the movie spoiled. But if you were never planning on reading the book, then who cares? It's not necessary to enjoy the movie.

I kinda recall John being happy with Rogue One needing people to read Catalyst to fill in gaps of the movie, but that was many years back so maybe I am remembering it wrong. But also when the novelisation of TLJ was published Rian Johnson wrote some of it with the main author to fill in gaps and explain parts of the movie people had complained about. To me that's even worse. The director of the movie having to help write the novel of the film to fix his mistakes!!

No you should not have to read a book to understand or enjoy a movie. But people should also not base their criticisms of any movie based on a previous adaptation, which happens a lot. You can say you preferred any adaptation you want but you can't argue which one "got it right" if you have never read the original source. Case in point: complaints that Batman Begins got it wrong because "everyone knows it was the joker who shot them" when that was entirely created for the 1989 movie adaptation.

For the Middle Earth saga it doesn’t matter but definitely read the Harry Potter books before you see the films.

No. If anything I usually find that if I've read the book I end up hating the movie because it's never as good as I imagined while reading it. Best examples of this are Hunger Games and Ready Player One. Loved the books, really didn't care all that much for the movies.

IT is probably my all time favorite fiction book. Even though they're pretty dissimilar, I loved the first movie but thought the second was pretty bad, not because of any disconnect from the book but because they were a good and bad movie, respectively.

The point of an adaptation is to take the book onto the screen. It's failed if you need to read the book too. Sure it can give you a good appreciation of the movie, but it should be able to stand on its own

Then a viewer sent in a $350 superchat, and said here's money for the hot toy. But here a year later john is still saying he never got it and saying how expensive it is.

Well to answer the topic question, it depends on the job the film maker does setting up the world. I watched The Lord of the Rings Trilogy before reading the books and I was blown away. I read the books afterwards and preferred the movies(but hey it’s engaging more senses).
