Points per shot is dumb, because...free throws. Just use TS%, like the real dorks.

could you do a chart part on "how many points Wilt Chamberlain and Shaq would've finished with if they shot the league average in free throws?"

I want to dispel a couple of myths in the comments:

(Myth #1) "The Rockets would have won the series if Chris Paul wasn't injured."

*Why it isn't true:* This is hard to prove, but I genuinely believe that, while Chris Paul was a very important player, in Game 6 the margin was too great for him to make a difference, and in Game 7, in literally everything *but* hitting their three's, his teammates *more* than covered for his absence. I'm not even going to go into Game 6. I think most people would agree that having Paul would not have made up a 29-point difference on the road. So what about Game 7? Well, what difference would Paul have made?

The *biggest* difference that he makes is his ability to create wide-open shots for his teammates. He's very good at driving, kicking it out, and giving his teammates acres of space to shoot three's (which was one key reason the Rockets were so successful)? They could have used that in Game 7, right? Clearly, they missed so many 3-pointers in a row because the Warriors contested them very well, correct?

Wrong! Here's the video of all 27 misses (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jox6ggZpxnI). Count how many three's were *wide* open (i.e. no one was within 6 feet of the guy shooting)! I count *at least* 7, maybe 8! Even without Paul, the Rockets were executing their gameplan to set their shots up *perfectly!* They were getting *more* wide open three's than they normally do *with* Paul on the court! And yet, they missed *all* of them! If they make even *half* of those shots (4 shots = 12 points, they lost by nine), they win!

But then, of course, he also would've been *shooting* three's as well. True. But even the best of the Rockets shooters don't make more than 40% of their shots (that includes Paul). In that streak of 27 missed three's, 5 different players (Harden, Gordon, Tucker, Ariza, Green) took an average of about 5 shots each, and missed *all* of them (somehow, all five went completely ice cold from the field all at the same time)! If Paul were there, even if he shot normally, in all likelyhood, he'd have gotten no more than 4 of those shots. Even if he hits half of them (again, remember, his average is ~35%, i.e. less than half), they still fall 3 points short!

Basically, the Rockets lost *not* because they couldn't step up without Paul, but simply because they went freakishly cold as a team at the worst of times in an event that almost certainly will never be repeated in history! The simple fact is that, in Game 7, they played so well when doing everything *besides* shooting the three, that there really wasn't much more that Paul could have done had he been there (and for anyone dumb enough to make the argument, "so he's useless!" *No!* Over the course of a season, there'd have been almost *no way* for the rest of the team to maintain that level of play without him. But for *one game,* they *seemed* to have more than made up for his absence and creating *even more* wide-open three-point opportunities than *he* normally does. Paul got them to that point, and all they had to do was play one game at that level without him and actually *make* the wide-open shots they created for themselves. They didn't and paid the price)!

(Myth #2) Dantoni's system is what cost them the series and the championship!

*Why it isn't true:* I'm not going to repeat everything I said above, because a lot of it overlaps. But simply put, in *that* season, Dantoni did *more* than enough to put his team in a position to win that game, that series, and the championship! Just look at the facts! If the Rockets shoot 4/27 (less than 15%) during that stretch, less than *half* their average, they *win!* They win the series, and they almost definitely go on to win the championship!

The natural claim there is that "well, he should have drawn up a system where they got easier shots." Again, look at the video above. *Eight* were *wide* open! Dantoni drew it up *perfectly!* All they need to do is make *half* of their *wide-open* three-pointers during that stretch, and they *win* (again, they win that game, which wins them the series, which all but guarantees them the championship)! In fact, let's go even deeper. The Rockets were shooting a "low" 25% before that streak began, and they *still* were leading by 15! Dantoni not only drew up a winning game plan, but drew one up *so well,* that even though his team was shooting *poorly* (25% for this Rockets team is *very* poor! Their average is 36%! That's literally a double-digit percentage drop, and yet, they were *still* ahead by 15)! He even had them up 11 at halftime even though they had gone ice cold from three in the latter third of the second quarter! And he did *all* of that with his second superstar injured against a dynastic Warriors team with *four All-stars* and *two* former MVPs!

Another claim people make was, "his players were tired." Yes, they were, but again, he seemed to have *accounted* for that! Again, they were *shooting poorly* (likely due to tired legs) *before* the streak began, and they were *still* ahead by 15 and had a double-digit lead going into half time despite going ice cold from 3 to end the half! He even got them *eight* wide open three's in the second half and the players missed *all* of them!

Let's make one thing very clear: basketball isn't a video game! The coach isn't controlling the players! He can't make those three's for them! He draws up a winning game plan, teaches them how to execute, and at *some* point, it's up to the players to do certain basic things! Let's put this as simplistically as possible. If his players had missed six *wide open dunks* (12 points, i.e. the equivalent of the 4 made three's that would have won them the game) that all came off of perfectly drawn up plays by Dantoni, *no way* would you be able to blame Dantoni for that! *Everyone* would agree that, "Dantoni put his team in a position where all they had to do was remember how to dunk! Seriously, he can't remind his team how to dunk? At some point, certain things become the players' responsibility. I don't know *exactly* where that line is, but I'm 100% sure it's *well* past the point of being able to make wide open dunks! You can't blame a coach for players doing that. That's on the players!" *This* is similar! Except instead of dunking, it was *shooting!* Dantoni's players for *some* reason *all* forgot *how to shoot!* Again, he did *everything he could possibly do* at that point as a coach to put his players in a position to win. He put his players in a position where they *arguably* had an easier task than "make 6 dunks" (make just *four* out of 27 threes! Literally, just hit *less than half* of your average! Shoot abysmally bad, but *not catastrophically bad* and you *still* win with the gameplan I've given you! Just do that!! I don't know what more I can possibly do as a coach without dressing up as you guys and hitting those shots myself)!

Basically, it's pretty clear that Dantoni did more than enough for someone in his role to win that year's championship. You can criticize him for other years, but you *can't* criticize him for *this* year! *He* did *everything* he possibly could! He drew up a game plan *so good* that all his players had to do was *not completely forget how to shoot* (i.e. *far* less than the bare minimum. Shooting 15% from three would've been *far below* the *bare* minimum already, and yet, if they had even done *that* during that stretch, they would've won the game, the series, and almost definitely the championship), and they couldn't even meet *that* incredibly low bar for him!

Again, I don't know exactly at what point the responsibility is no longer on the coach to create backup plans for failures, and it falls on the players to execute, but that point is *well beyond* "hit no less than a whopping 20%-less-than-your-average-three-point-percentage from beyond the arc; basically just don't completely forget how to shoot a basketball!" So, for *that* reason, to blame Dantoni for the failure of his players to capitalize on the amazing position he put them in is completely unfair to him! He deserved that championship more than anyone else on that team did, and it's sad that he didn't get it because his players completely let him down in the worst possible way!

In other words, it's unfair to blame that incredible cold streak on Paul's absence or on Dantoni! There wasn't much more Paul could have been asked to do to create more open shots than they already had at that point, and it's completely unfair to blame the man who drew up the game plan that gave them so many open shots (and opportunities to win even without them) despite having his second best player missing against a dynastic team with four All-stars and 2 former MVPs! That cold shooting streak falls solely on the complete failure of Harden, Gordon, Tucker, Ariza, and Green to meet even the most laughably minimal of standards when it came to their three-point shooting! They deserve *all* the criticism for their failure (they performed amazingly well that season to get to that point, but even then, that catastrophic a failure in that critical moment was unacceptable after all the effort Chris Paul, Mike Dantoni, and so many others had put in to put them in that incredible position)!

I liked this video until you tried to claim Harden is one of the most efficient scorers. His career line is .443 FG / .364 3PT - in Houston he’s only shot over .37 once from 3. His numbers all come from his “ability” to get to the line. Since he became a starter, he has lead the league in FT attempts 6 of those 7 years. And this isn’t because he’s Shaq and gets mauled at the rim, he created a form of flopping in which he hooks his defenders arms and kicks his legs out during every shot. He is the worst kind of flopper. A big reason he has such a nightmare postseason career. Relying on the officials to bail you out doesn’t always work in the playoffs.

As a Rockets fan, I've hated the massive three-point focus forever, because it may look awesome averaged over 82 games, but it may fail in one or more critical games in the playoffs where averages don't matter. Unfortunately, though, I actually watched the game, so I also know there was more to this game than missing 27 threes in a row.

As others have pointed out, there was an egregious number of fouls not called that would have benefited the Rockets including arguably four threes by Harden, who's an 85% free throw shooter. But let's not focus on threes. There was a point in the game, either second or third quarter, in the middle of that stretch of missed threes where the Rockets DID try to go to a different scoring strategy by instead driving to the basket. It was clear they knew they were off that night behind the arc, and they DID try to change things. The refs killed that approach dead by swallowing their whistles on obvious driving fouls, forcing the team to retreat back to the three-point line where they had nothing that night.

Yes, I cringed at every missed three, cursing the Morey-D'Antoni system more than ever, but I cursed even more at the obvious bullshit coming from the refs. It was the clearest thing I've personally seen of a fix being in, and I never go down that road when I watch games. We both did and didn't deserve to lose that game.
