To compare Lion in Winter to Camelot as a similar glossy historical movie means you haven't SEEN Lion in Winter. It was a play made into a low budget (except for the stars) movie. The Whole MOVIE (almost) takes place in a few dark rooms in a drab medieval castle. Even the costumes are mostly drab. Forcing it into the trend of overblown expensive costume musicals is completely absurd. It's closer to Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf.

Thank you, that was so interesting! I remember that ceremony vividly! My mom was so pissed that Streisand won as well as Hepburn! Her remark, interestingly enough, was 'Why should SHE win anything if she was just playing herself!' Well, as you stated, in each roll, each actress was actually playing a version of who they were! I see the reason for the tie. They both deserved it!
I think we need another revolution in the Academy like Gregory Peck did!

By 3 film credits do you mean 3 Oscar nominations?

That should have been Hepburn's and Hepburn's alone. They shouldn't do that to someone like her, not to mention Streisand had a long career ahead of her and Hepburn's career was dying down. Also the fact that she and O'Toole together was a true force of nature in that film should have made it clear and put her right at the top... I'm a huge fan of Omar Sharif as well, but that Oscar should have been Hepburn's.... There should be absolutely no ties for such a thing. And yeah, Streisand shouldn't have been given a membership just yet. That's not right. They should really offset the number of members so that it's not even possible for things like this happen

Wow, they tied! There should be more ties! Olympics need to do more ties too! Why did Katherine refuse to show up to get her Oscar since she was able to do great work while mourning!

Interesting trivia: When Anthony Harvey called Katharine Hepburn to tell her she won and would deliver her Oscar to her, she told him to deliver it in a paper bag. Years later, when he was visiting her at her home in New York, he was looking for something in one of her kitchen cupboards and found the Oscar still wrapped in the paper bag.

The various members of the 2 demographics might conceivably begrudge the sharing of the honor between the 2 actresses. & that would be understandable. Human nature typically wants the lion's share of the loot...to maximize the profits. But the symbolism of the twin victory is almost an affirmation that fairness sometimes actually happens.

1969? That's the same year of the infamous tie-in in Eurovision when FOUR countries share the win (UK, France, The Netherlands and Spain). They made a lot of new rules about that to avoid it in the future (eg. In case of a tie, whoever got the most 12s (top points set) goes first). I found it funny both happened within weeks of each other.

                                                                                    • Nikki

I mean, otherwise there would be lots and lots of members and it's an academy (an elite) after all. Making it more inclusive and representative of society and film industry, ues, by all means.

It would be most interesting to be able to see (not possible though) the exact numbers, of the 3,030 votes cast how many each of the five nominees received, as imo it is likely that it could have been an even bigger shock with a possible three way tie, since I am sure Joanne Woodward was close behind the number of votes that K.Hepburn and B.Streisand got. Joanne Woodward was nominated for best actress for "Rachel, Rachel" a critically acclaimed motion picture that a few months prior to the Oscars that year won The New York Film Critics Award for Best Actress(Joanne Woodward) and Best Director(Paul Newman, Joanne's husband), and the film "Rachel, Rachel" was first runner up in The NYFCC awards for Best Picture. Also, Joanne Woodward won The Golden Globe a few months earlier also for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama (Rachel, Rachel). The other two nominees-Patricia Neal and Vanessa Redgrave gave good performances but the films they were in (The Subject was Roses and Isadora respectively, received mixed reviews). So the numbers could have been something (albeit only an educated guess estimate) like 900 each for Hepburn and Streisand, 890 for Woodward, with the remaining 350 votes split between O'Neal and Redgrave (ie 150-200 each); just saying that not out the question that if Woodward had gotten a few more votes it is possible (although I know it has never happened and is statistically very highly unlikely) that there could have been a 3 way tie (Hepburn, Streisand and Woodward); Just imagine what a trip that would have been.

I don't care how much money it lost, "Camelot" is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. I don't care whose parts they belonged to or originated with (love you all, Julie, Dick, and Bob). I don't care that Julie Andrews could sing curlicues of incandescent circles around Vanessa Redgrave. I don't care, I don't care, I don't care: The world would be much poorer if Vanessa Redgrave hadn't given us her Guinevere and put it on film, singing along the way quite admirably. (Though if hear Marni Nixon dubbed this, too ...)
