  • The announcement is official, and we are indeed getting an official Critical Role D&D book. I go through the official announcement of the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount. I also looked at some of Matt's personal feedback regarding it and people's opinions. What are your thoughts?

As someone who started getting interested in D&D very recently and was officially introduced with critical role during the end of campaign one. I still have very mixed feelings about this book. On one hand I’m so excited to take part in the fantasy of what Matt and all the members of Critical Role have created but to me that was the height of what could be created within the rules of the game. Now it feels like some of the creativity has been washed away by saying his creation is now fact. Bittersweet is the only way to describe it.

I was really hoping for some new monstrous player races cause those are my favorite and I thought I read something saying they it had new ones, nevertheless I’m very exited! I think echo-knight is so cool! I really wanna play it in my next campaign!

Oh seems like Matt needs a hug or something? What the... Look it's an interesting environment. Look... they (CR) have made millions. I think this Reddit is crap. He, like many of us, is a social chameleon/engineer. In fact, the best DMs are. So... Can't downvote the video cause I think I was like number 100 to subscribe and I love your approach and content. But this book is NOT what I personally wanted after shotgun after shotgun blasts of UA like weekly since Nov or maybe earlier. (seems like there is a trip hammer on Mondays right now) At the end of the day? Hobby. Sry man I couldn't watch past like 11 mins. All the best to you and yours. You create great stuff

I am still very much concerned about balance issues between Mercer's Homebrewed Spless/Classes, and the Classic Spells and Classes. I fear this will be 3.5 psionics, all over again, which was completely broken, and make everything else not as fun, or engaging.

Todd Kenreck sat down and spoke to James and James who also co-authored the book and they spoke about balanced. All the spells, subclasses, items the lot was fully vetted & playtested fully the same as any new 5e content is. Went through something like 3 rounds of revisions before were satisfied and removed anything unbalanced:

You mentioned a DnD Exandria or Critical Role book with other classes in it besides this one in the video, from Green Ronin. What book was that? Tal'Dorei?

                • Danny Kriegbaum Laursen

I don't get why Matt need to apologies for this book since no one seem to be mad (at less from my knowledge) when Rick and Morty, AI or Ebonron was announced (if their was any mad over Ebonron... Please go outside and please cancel your internet)

I love that Matt and Critical role want to share in an official product what they do and enjoy! I personally feel it's silly to be mad over this, for me, the more options for D&D 5E the better and no one is being forced to play this. As far as other D&D content preferences from the community being voiced, I'm sure those will come eventually, but I'm looking forward to checking out the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount.

As if Mercer's homebrew is any less developed than the junk Wizards squirts out themselves. Hell, let Mercer make a new Ranger class, it's almost a guarantee it'd be better. Or a full Level 14-20 overhaul of most classes that effectively don't have capstones and a some of them not having much high level value in general.
The crybabies whining about having more optional content is pathetic.

As someone who only got back into DnD because of Matt, I'm excited but also concerned that Critical Role has a place in the community that is strangely both toxic and a source of life. As long as this addition hasn't taken away any resources from WOTC except for their marketing team, then I don't see any major issue with this book being released officially. The DM can always say no, even if it has a fancy Wizard's trademark on the cover.

New setting, new adventures, new monster, new items and new subclasses. Yet what I see people complain about is that it's not an update on an old thing or that people are worried about "balance". For me the more recent Unearthed Arcana and Critical Role content are easily the most interesting things to have happened to the game, so this new book is only a good thing in my eyes. There shouldn't be restrictions on fun, especially in regards to an RPG.

I would like if they would do a sourcebook followed by a adventure in that setting. I know it has been a strange new world they are trying to do business in this internet society. But making every book a 'must-buy' for everyone needs to stop. For the average player to start is a little to expensive. If they would just make a players handbook 2019 update with all new player options in the year it could make it better.

@Aaron Hunter Ie the issue make one book that is just the character options, setting, items, lore and the have nots for the players. Then 4-6 weeks later an adventure in that campaign with more monsters, map, NPCs, and all for the DM so that it's not split between multiple books for the players or if not have a yearly book that collects the player updates for the year so they dont have to buy every book.

Hopefully its good, although still hope they do more worlds other than swordcoast. and I wanna see that 3rd party link to like the leveling weapons, sounds cool. I've done it my own way but never really writen down rules for when it happens.

He has another book out, for the first campaign - same world, different continent. I think this one should be more refined.

I don't have enough time to consume everything they put out as of now. I wish I had the luxury of being able to play so often that I felt like I was short on content... but I don't. So more options is just good imho.

After 20 plus years of Internet drama over D&D, versions, books, Etc... this is fine. The cynical side of me feels like this was an easy decision since it will definitely sell books. But at least they won't fall into the trap that Pathfinder did where you have to keep pushing the power creep in order to keep selling books. And 3.5 was just silly since people were buying books just to get one broken feat. As far as second choice, I don't really care about that anymore. After playing Savage Worlds I am finally free of worrying about settings. I mean, if you want to play Dark Sun today, how much work is it really? Just re-skin things until you're happy.

I'm excited to see this, and with Matt specifically commenting that this book isn't delaying anything, I almost wonder if Wizards plans to release one of these older settings but needed more time? Obviously, something like what Matt put out can't be done off the cuff, but I wonder if it's a sort of safety net to ensure too much time doesn't pass between releases, so they can ensure they don't rush something like Dark Sun? After all, just having that padding is nice, because if things remain on schedule, we get more books, more quickly. Also, frankly speaking, Wizards would be foolish to ignore the Critical Role community, as it is many people's introduction into D&D. This is a way to welcome them into the community in a more official capacity. I'll definitely be purchasing the book, because not only do I want to support Matt and the others, but I love the ideas he has. I already own the Tal'Dorei Campaign Guide from Green Ronin, and I really like what is in there. So, overall, I am pretty excited for this.

No offence to anyone and congrats to Matt. But it seems like the WOTC business plan has changed to Forgotten Realms then some streaming group campaign setting and then more Forgotten Realms and then some rehashed TSR modules and then more Forgotten Realms and then some stream groups campaign setting and then reworked TSR modules and the more Forgotten Realms and then so on and so on and so on until D&D5E is so big and overwhelming and customers are leaving to play the next best thing. Then WOTC announces Dungeons and Dragons 6E I suppose I'm just jaded I have to wait another 5 months to see next product.

Said it in the dndbeyond videos as well, will say it here. I was not interested in the first book, but after what has been revealed what is in the second one, I preordered. I love the Dunamancy type of magic, the new subclasses, items and monsters, starting adventures, and the wildemount campaign currently is right up my alley style wise. While I enjoyed the first campaign, because of the players and their shenanigans and especially the final battle, I really like the "new cast" (characters) much more and am happy that Mollymauk is gone, because he seemed like the meth addict everyone makes fun of for being a crackhead. Like an artifact from campaign one. Now it really feels like something new and because I love to take stuff and change it, this is going to proof useful.

Also don't worry, I know there are way too many people getting easily "triggered" nowadays because of CR stuff. I'm not "that" kinda person. ;) Which makes me remember, when they fought that Ancient White Dragon at Level 9 and they shit their pants. I was so hoping for a death or two like literally half the rebroadcast chat. :D People got so mad at us! Was hoping they can finally put their diamonds to some use and "Regis" (Witcher 3 Reference) someone from a wet smear. Or an icicle! Ha!

Tho i can’t say anything about the rest of your comment because I haven’t gotten into dnd (yet) i will agree with it being better with mollymauk being gone. I love the character, but looking back if he didn’t die there I could’ve only seen him going downhill. Molly was a comfortzone for talisien, his death created cadeuces(which i adore) and caused the party to be (at least a little) less dumb and more mature. Also the lingering questions about him and the party reminiscing are way more interesting than just another edgelord (sorry if that remark offends you, but i get tired of the edgy protagonist) as that is what annoyed me about caleb at first and to some degree still does. Welp i went on way to long for only one sentence of ur comment so i’ll go now, bye!

No matter your opinion on the book itself, whether you will pick it up or not, even if you like it or not; the fact is clear that Matt puts a hell of a lot of work and effort and emotion into this book. While it may not be the classic story’s that some were expecting, it is a fresh take on something new. Please don’t think I’m trying to invalidate the classics, I really would love to play them revamped, I just also think that kind of hard work should also be noticed and taken into account even if you disagree. That was my 2 cents on the matter. Thank you ^_^
